Many of the islands were indeed first colonized by the Chinese, whether in the form of navy sailors, fishermen, business traders or settlers as evidenced by the relics and artifacts left there by the Chinese in the past and that can't be said the same of you Viets. Therefore, Chinese have the right to claim those islands. Chinese are not saying the South China Sea belongs to China as the Indians claim that Indian Ocean is India's ocean.

The conceit of defeating US became a burden for Vietnamese. It hurt them badly in past decades and will hurt them for long. I can understand India being hostile to China as it's a big neighbour country. A small country like Vietam hates its giant neighbour so much. Which is by no means a good choice.
