Featured IAF Mi-17-V5 Helicopter carrying CDS Bipin Rawat with family crashes

Radar altimeters are not precise at low altitudes, let alone a tube one from fifties.

Very likely they just turned off the warning.

This is a key distinction in between a forward looking terrain avoidance radar, vs simple radar altimeter. The prior does a lot of computing to figure out a dangerous flight envelope.

So, they put aftermarket upgrades on their helos. Then this turns much less clear.
This was an upgraded aircraft and moreover even the tube radar altimeter would give some indication of reduced altitude. You’re not in a fixed wing aircraft where forward momentum is the only way to change direction/speed.

The overall conclusion is -

Indians should avoid chopper/jets. IAF is advised to take flying carpet instead for certain period.

A radar altimeter will not warn you about a hill right in front of you if it sees enough space right underneath it. A steep enough hill, canyon will deceive it.

But this wasn’t your run of the mill Hip. Lets say the RA was deceived this thing has a moving map onboard as well. A lot of mistakes were made on this flight especially considering the precious cargo

One can give the benefit of the doubt to those pilots but as as someone with a few hours into training I would not expect pilots to miss calibration of the altimeter by 1500ft.

Anybody know the height of the takeoff point?
1500FT

It is all but confirmed that it was sabotage by IAF (highest level or a rouge subset is still to be determined). They knew weather conditions including dense fog and knew that pilots will be using IFR. They sabotaged the instruments (calibration) so that the helicopter would fly low than intended in hilly terrain. Also they put in IAF officer in charge of investigation so my guess is it will be swept under the rug. All in all the tussle in between the tri services will increase in coming years.

Makes that even worse. The hips all have Radar altimeters which should have been beeping away even as they approached the hillside. A lot of safety aspects were ignored in making this accident happen
Chances of altimeter malfunctioning?

.The black box will tell the story but at this point each there are no easy causes to swallow.

- Either the helicopter developed a major fault and is vulnerable in certain conditions,

- Or one of our pilots made a fatal mistake

- Or some sort of sabotage, If external then it's an act of war.. If internal then I can't even imagine the fallout.

Black box will not see the light of day if it was an inside job.

I'm not sure how the information from a black box communications flight record will disclose that's it's an external sabotage???... It's not like ISI or Chinese agents will suddenly come on the comm and start telling, "you are dead meat, ha,ha,ha, btw this is ISI checking in, over!".

As for External...

As for Pakistan & China; its just that easy for India to blame but in this particular case, the external pretty points towards the fraands of Modi and he cannot imagine to warrant any heat at all. In my opinion, if it is external then trust me, Indian will never try to find the external linkages into this in the first. They will just close their eyes to it. By external means; it has be either Pakistan or China to blame and that's it. In the end, there's no true enquiry result at all.

For a consumerist society like India which would dedicate million man hours discussing the most mundane, the eerie silence on the accidental death of one of Asia's most celebrated 4 star general is unfortunate and tragic.

Maybe it will be the case of having more skeletons than ghosts in the closet, a prospect far sobering than an average Indian drama.
