I used to be skeptical of Malik Riaz but not anymore. He had agreed to pay Rs. 200+ billion for the BTK land. But an authority no less than the Supreme Court of Pakistan forced him to pay well over Rs. 400 billion for the land. In return, MR has created a gem of a housing project which has created tons of thousands of jobs in Pakistan and would continue to create more. The idea of the Eminent Domain must prevail when needed but in a fair way.
I like to Malik Riaz is Pakistan's version of America's old 'Barron-Robbers': Taking advantage of their wealth to gain undue advantages but also end up creating a lot in return. It is a dirty form of Capitalism but it does work on some level. Look at where my $90k has ended: In Pakistan instead of some other place. And think about how many tens of millions the overseas Pakistanis have invested in MR and DHA projects? Today one may say that real estate is not good to invest blah blah. But that money is still ending up in Pakistan instead of staying out of Pakistan--and that's what Pakistani planners should never lose sight of.

Coming back to this. There is no question about PPP in cahoots with Sindhi nationalist elements stirring the pot. Haroon Rashid has a video out there where he's criticizing Bilawal for unfairly blaming Punjab for water theft. One raider of BTK yesterday is even saying something like: "This is all Sindhi land and only Sindhis are entitled to it!". Wonderful! The Urdu Speakers of urban Sindh had been voting for religious organizations, then MQM, and now have put their lot with PTI. But if PTI fails them then in the next elections they may vote en-block for MQM again. It seems like in Pakistan unproductive mullahs and people in the grip of feudalism and archaic social practices (a large part of Pakistan excludes women from the economic activity) just can't accept productive patriotic people and would rather burn down their private properties.
Definitely the best post of the entire thread.

He converted a desert into perhaps one of the best places to live in Pakistan, a plain with a few villages hardly numbering a few hundred people into a city for a million. Now there's employment, the land is productive. MR deserves credit.

Yes. Indeed.

Must watch this video--a Punjabi official from BTK. Contrary to some bigots making it like the Urdu Speakers have stolen some land, BTK is heavily Punjab-originated and hats off for their effort. What has the Sindhi Wadera done given the resources to them? More farms. Colleges which are Diploma Mills. Repressive societies for women. That is after multiple governments by the PPP since 1971.

A reassuring video conference by Zardari's right hand man in Sindh. So much so for some comparing this with Israel-Palestinian landgrab! Some people's ethnic hatred blinds them to the reality!

Good cop, Bad cop being played by the root of all evil in Sindh.

Catch all those mob culprits in front of cameras & execute them 1 by 1

Radical measures lead to further radicalization.
What is needed is an approach towards understanding everyone's problems and then trying the best one can to fix them. The hard truth is that Bahria Town is complete, it is not going anywhere, it'll only grow further. Too late to change anything. The villagers agreed and kept silent for almost a decade when Bahria Town was being developed. All of a sudden in a matter of a year they and communist brigade are out to cancel Bahria. 10 saalon se so rahe the kya??
Considering how much communist brigade is mixed with PPP, I sense PPP is trying to play some game here. Not sure what, but seems as if there's been a split between MR and Zardari. I might be wrong, who knows. But PPP definitely has a larger role than what seems to be the case on the surface.

It is a possibility that Murad has to publicly condemn the attackers and also has to concede that it was the Supreme Court of Pakistan which had given its blessings to the Baharia Town Karachi. And yet his statement also dents the claims made by some that the BKT land is stolen blah blah. If anything, the land was sold pretty cheap by Zardari to Malik Riaz but the Supreme Court made MR cough up Rs. 450+ billion to pay a more fair price.

how can we trust the words of this man when initial remarks are false and deliberate lie ..... SCP only ask to pay Malik Riaz the amount of those land which were given to them by Sindh Government at very very low price ....

Market rate of the land was estimated PKR +1 trillion therefore SC decided to impose plenty of PKR +400 billion and here he is lying that SC has given land to BTK ....

Honestly I don't know who is who in Pakistan. It is only in last two days that I have paid this much attention to Pakistan's politics after a long time. I have enough of a life and its worries here in America. But I had to get involved in this because, as you know, I recently put in $90,000+ into buying a BTK property--hard earned money! So I need to understand.

Here is another video I'd like to share; this is from the Jamaat e Islami leader of Karachi. Though I'd never vote for a party which uses religion as a tool to get power, I have always respected JI as a party because they have the least corrupt, most organized and least prejudiced people in Pakistan. And I trust this guy!

If you watch this video, then it starts to get especially interesting after minute 5: This guy is saying that that area of BTK where there are the new claims has an especially bad history of rich people--and even criminals--exploiting poor people for agitation. Watch this and other and start to put together a puzzle and you'd notice this is almost all about $$ and ethnic politics.

Been reading through this thread and still trying to figure out the entire meaning behind what is going on.

The saying is true, you only know if you ask. So I’m asking as a complete outsider, what’s going on?

Doesn’t have to be long or complicated, just curious

Well, I am getting my feet wet all of a sudden trying to understand this because of my investment in the Baharia Town Karachi. Otherwise, I have not cared for the Pakistani politics much in decades.
I am going to post a video here which summarizes things quite well. It's in Urdu but I will give a summary of what I have understood so far based on this and other videos.

So Baharia Town Karachi (BTK) is a new gated community around Karachi. It is considered part of Karachi city. A multibillionaire guy Malik Riaz (MR) bought a good bit of fairly barren land which now becomes BKT. MR, allegedly, paid too little money to buy the land to Asif Ali Zardari (AAZ) who effectively rules the province of Sindh. People realized that MR has essentially bribed AAZ to get the land cheap. The matter went to the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP). MR offered Rs. 200+ billion. But the SCP made him pay Rs. 450+. The matter got settled. But BTK wants to expand beyond that. And I don't know if they have acquired the land for the expansion or not but some villagers have been protesting and there was some violence trying to dislodge them. That needs to be investigated with no mercy shown to MR if he is indeed doing that. Once again, SCP can settle it.

BUT... all this is against the backdrop of Sindh's rural and urban divide, going back decades. Rural Sindhis have been losing to the Urban Sindhis on economic front but not through some carefully crafted machinations by the Urban Sindhis but due to the nature of their societies: One is largely feudal dominated while the other is not only more urbane but also more educated and Upwardly Mobile. So despite spending trillions in Rural Sindh since at least early 1970s, the plight of the Rural Sindh has not changed much. The level of corruption and incompetence is huge in Rural Sindh. They say in America that you can't fix stupid, true, but add to that you can't fix morally bankrupts either.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of which AAZ is the supreme leader, has ruled Sindh most of the time since 1970s and sometime even in the Federal Govt. But they have not dented Rural Sindhis' plightful situation much. Trillions have gone into Rural Sindh but not much to show for. Their medical colleges are Diploma Mill. Women are mostly confined. It is a repressive, retrogressive society where Sindhis--whom I genuinely regard as among the best of Pakistan because of their peaceful, humble nature--are in a perpetual state of backwardness.

It's a long story to tell. I had been a witness to all that growing up in Pakistan through the 1980s. The current crisis, as the following video would show, has its roots in AAZ's attempts to retain power in Sindh by using The Sindh Card--a blackmail to the State of Pakistan that we would secede or at least cause anarchy unless allowed to retain the power in Sindh. AAZ is mobilizing people to threaten the State of Pakistan. The Urban Sindhis are in direct threat because of that and they too are mobilizing and there is a supposed to be their show of strength on Friday; and they are also capable of violence given their history! Add to this power lust of PPP, there are literally tens of billions of $$ at stake in BTK: Cause anarchy, people sell cheap, MR or others would buy, and sell at higher prices....

They say 'follow the money trail'. I'd add or 'follow the power trail' in case of Pakistan.
