India’s indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II ballistic missile failed to take off during a user trial from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur off the Orissa coast on Friday apparently due to a technical problem, defence sources said.

Though the ITR authorities were not immediately available for comment, defence sources said the sophisticated missile could not take off during the planned trial from the launch complex-III of the test range due to some “technical snag.”

“The failure to lift Prithvi-II was due to a snag either in the main missile or the sub-system, including the launcher,” they said, adding the test-fire was slated to be held as part of user’s trial by the armed forces.

During today’s planned trial, a noise could be heard as smoke billowed from the launch site around the time of the blasting.

Efforts were on to ascertain the exact reason for the failure and defence scientists were examining the matter thoroughly, they said.

The last four user trials of the surface-to-surface missile had been successfully conducted from the same site in the ITR.

The last trial was conducted on June 18, this year.

The Hindu : News / National : Prithvi-II fails to take off in user trial

As expected ...... Prithvi Series have not been Upgraded with anything Latest.... DRDO is concentrating only on Agni Series when it comes to ballistic missiles, Even though it is listed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program....

4 success and 1 failure, not an issue, they'll improve it and make it more reliable...

Various versions of Prithvi being tested atleast 20+ times as part of development tests, as well as target for PAD and AAD. It has a very good record. So I guess its a little snag.

I have a speculation. Can it be the new Agni-II AT aka Agni-II+ ? There were news that it will be tested by the end of this month. Earlier also many times DRDO passed new missile tests as 'Prithvi trials'. Example K-15 missile. :sniper:

That could actually be the case since Prithvi is a fairly mature system and has been tested something like 30 times in the last 10 yrs and is already deployed with navy and army:what::blink:

And frankly India would like to hide the testing of gen 2 Agni II missiles coz it is far more accurate (Variance of 10 meter Vs 40 meter for Previous version) missile and also has a range of 3000 Km , thats the reason why it was dubbed as Agni 2.5

Even during the development of K15 missile , its first 2 test were disclosed as Test of prithvi missile , next 2 were shown as land based Shaurya Missile and only the last 2 test which were underwater launches were actually disclosed as test of K15 Missile

An Indian nuclear-capable ballistic missile failed to take off during a test launch in eastern India on Friday, the Indian Express newspaper reported.

The Prithvi-II was to blast off from Chandipur in the eastern state of Orissa at 10:03 am local time (04:03 GMT), but failed to do so after heavy smoke covered the launch pad, sources in the Indian Defense Ministry said.

It is as yet unclear why the missile failed to take off.

The Prithvi-II, with a maximum range of 350 km and a payload capacity of 500 kg, was last test-fired on June 18.

You do get your speculations right sometimes...:)
Even i was wondering why would a matured missile progrm like Prithivi will fail...

Hahahahahahaha... Might be engine Failure..

BTW, cw Games Are abt to start and indian's testing their Missiles.

And Air force. Prithvi-II is mainly developed for IAF to destroy enemy forward air bases. I can't understand why 'trial' after so many years of induction.

Also its the base of few new missiles development programmes as well.

Agreed. There were reasons to hide first test of a new missile.

Everything is in 'Prithvi' only, you knowww.... ;)

Pls don't relate these two events. They are completely different. Prithvi is a matured missile and tested nearly 25+ times in previous years and almost all tests were successful. It has very good record.

My speculation : It may be the new Agni-IIAT. :sniper:
