Huawei: A Reliable Business Partner of Turkcell

February 05, 2019 09:29 AM Eastern Standard Time

ISTANBUL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The following is a statement from Turkcell.

Turkcell (NYSE: TKC) (BIST: TCELL) CEO Kaan Terzioglu stated that Huawei has been a reliable business partner and the partnership is set to continue.

Terzioglu mentioned that the 21st century is built on personal data processing: “Processing personal data without consent, digital imperialism shuts in individuals on every ground by and manipulates decisions at scale. The problem is not just about personal data privacy, it’s also about just ‘a couple of global companies’ desire to stay in power.”

Turkcell CEO mentioned that security vulnerability claims against Huawei cannot be evaluated in isolation from the current developments in the market.

“It wouldn’t be right to evaluate Huawei’s current situation by ignoring the competition in the smart phone market and the conflict of which company will lead 5G. You may recall that last year another smartphone company faced unfavorable news. As you can see, whenever an ‘unexpected’ company gets ahead, they are confronted. No one should expect us to act on uncorroborated claims. Turkcell will continue to work with its long-time business partner Huawei,” he added.

“We are ready for all kinds of risks”

Terzioglu stated that the recent developments have once again proved the importance of Turkcell’s initiatives on local and national technology developments as: “Data security remains as a top priority national security issue globally. We have witnessed many failures of Western companies in securing personal data. There still are ongoing cases and investigations on this specific topic. Consequently, we are completely aware of potential risks. We have been and always will be cautious about our business partnerships. We are very well prepared in regardless of where we buy the technology whether it is from a Chinese, European or an American company. We have the necessary means to secure our networks and our customer’s data.”

It is encouraging to see that Turkcell is ready to work with the industry's leader that holds the most advanced technologies along with about 3000 5G-related patents.

I would think twice. They say, they are ready for all kinds of risks, but I don't think so. There is a high risk of you use HUAWEI technology. Lets make it clear. Chinese or China at all are not trustable. China has a different minds and philosophy than west and even people from Middle East.

2 different 5g is emerged and It looks like Huawei has more reliable and faster technology. But Which Technology is gonna win this race is mostly political debate. And Whoever gives better bid for Turkish market, We should opt for that. We should pay very little to IP rights of 5G while we can use our software to minimize any Risk. And There is no reason why We shouldnt built base station and other comminucation equipment for both side.

If Turkey wanted to buy 5G from the West. The west will say fck off we wont sell to you then later say why arent you getting 5G from us.

With China, I want to get 5G and China will say gladly here you go. Pleasure doing business. At least when you buy from China they dont pull out bullshit like the USA does.

I wouldn't be quite so sure about that. There is a major boycott of Chinese goods happening in Turkey right now. According to preliminary trade data, our imports from China decreased by almost 50% in January. This is huge. Our trade with China is collapsing. Keep in mind, there are no sanctions or hurdles imposed by the gov't.

It's our people. They are deliberately avoiding 'Made in China'.

Whatever.......
Turkcell itself will make the choice consistent with its interest

Besides, buying from Huawei protects you from US spying and information control efforts (or spying done through US allies such as Germany) done through state programs such as PRISM, which utilizes US telecommunication companies such as ORACLE to do the US regime bidding.

German industries have suffered from US spying and theft.

At MWC 2019, Huawei took home another five GSMA awards across a wide collection of categories, and more importantly, the 5G deals continued. Rain announced that it’s using Huawei solutions in South Africa’s just-launched first 5G network, and Swiss carrier Sunrise said it’s using Huawei gear to commence commercial 5G service next month. Huawei also announced similar 5G hardware deals with Bahrain’s VIVA, Iceland’s Nova, Indonesia’s Telkomsel, Malaysia’s Maxis, Saudi Arabia’s STC, and Turkey’s Türk Telekom.

We know this very well (US spying of Germany), but it does not mean that we will allow you the same.

I think, conversion of the existing 4.5G network to 5G in Turkey was agreed to be given to state companies. ( action plan SSB-44 ÇINAR Project) . For the base stations, a budget decision was made for the system developed by ULAK Communication Inc. (action plan SSB-45 National Base Station Development (ULAK) Project)

Huawei signed a cooperation protocol for joint R & D with local operator Turkcell In 2015. However, according to the recent decisions, state investments will be the determinant in infrastructure transformation rather than private capital groups.

As we wrote somewhere in the forum before, Turkish Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK, the main institution in this field, in Turkey) sign a cooperation agreement with Japan firms also, on 5G technology during a forum in South Korea , last year. If you scan news, you can find much more. Another example, agreement was made about Turkish ASELSAN's microwave radio and antenna systems integrating to KEYSIGHT Technologies' 5G waveform generator, signal analyzer and vector signal generator for reference test setup, two years ago. Under the agreement, Aselsan has taken some components "not yet localized" from Keysight as a stop-gap solution. Although Aselsan is basically a defense company, it is making an important effort to localize the components of civil communication systems. Company's main activity area is microwave and communication systems. Even though the company has turned to different fields of expertise in time, focused the field of health technologies and civil communication technologies with the decisions taken in 2015 and 2017 . Frankly, I don't know if Aselsan has a deal with Huawei. But I don't think it's possible.

In a nutshell, according to recent state decisions, network transformation in Turkey will not be in Turkcell (private operator) initiative. As far as I understand, all these issues are about information security , not entirely domestic production.

U either get spied on by the west or the east
choose your poison.

GSM alone is enough to trace your location down to meters, stop using credit cards issued by foreign banks that is if you are ok with being spied on by your local government, etc u get the idea.

Dont want to be spied on? u will have to live like a caveman cut off everything from the rest of the world.

Being emotional isn't going to get you anywhere, rationality + objectiveness will take you places.

Actually the article is wrong. Turkey is a very uniwue country that develop their own 5G technology, they finished 4.5G and in service in Turkey now.

We know this very well (US spying of Germany), but it does not mean that we will allow you the same.

If you do not allow us, you have to allow US or Germany to spy.

In one way or another, you have to allow someone given that you do not have the tech advantage such as 3000+ patents on 5G.

Besides, China never interferes in others' internal politics. Germany or US do interfere in Turkey internal politics. So, Huawei is the best option.

At least Turks can diversify their portfolio and reduce risks.
