Why MIG-21 ?

I think in 1965 as well during pathankot raid if I am not wrong
The 28 Squadron was up and ready when the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 kicked off and participated in escort and combat air patrol missions. Notably, there was an engagement with R-3S missiles against a force of PAF F-86 Sabre fighters, but the missiles did not connect.

After the loss of two MiG-21s in the ground to an airbase attack, 28 Squadron was withdrawn from the front.

Today some member posted a video in which su30 could be seen being chased by a Jf 17
all i can see both were thunder can you post screen shot of that video ?

News is that we hit their golden bird. Both sides are hiding...

Why we shall hide that sir ? Because of having not sufficient evidence ? Or because there is something else ?

i don't think so sir . its not possible to hide such big thing now even villagers have camera mobiles if su-30 fall we may have tons of data .

Pakistan govt in its latest release still maintain that they shot down 2 planes. Also many govt officials on TV interviews are saying 2 planes. Are they lying?

The logic is that, our government didn't want further escalation. Their government didn't want further embarrassment. Win win situation.

We were receiving different shots from different wreckages that morning so they all mixed up. Also don't forget that second plane crashed inside IOK. Even if it was another mig 21 then why India not showing its wreckage? Considering they officially admitted in written statement that 2 of their jets lost in action.

Amidst all that has happened , one thing that needs to be analyzed is why india sent MIG-21 ?
They have newer more advanced aircrafts which would serve better in an offensive role

A MIG-21 being sent across enemy lines actually points towards operational and procedural problems in the IAF with regards to newer aircraft.

Perhaps a mix of western and Russian airframes is the issue, too many aircraft types in the inventory ?
Buying a high tech aircraft is one thing but using it in an operational area is quite another.

The high end aircraft we know in IAF inventory are the Mirage2000, Su30 and Rafale.
Are none of these ready for the task ?

India also sent M-2000s and Flankers alongside their Bisons, this is what their Air Force themselves said.

But they still couldn't stop the PAF from bombing multiple targets, and returning back to Pakistan safely. They even lost some of their own aircraft in the process. Keep in mind, the PAF only brought some Roses and Thunders, which as per India are vastly inferior to what the IAF has.

So much for IAF superiority. I think they really do need those Rafales.

:D

we shot down mig-21 in 1971 war
we shot down mig-21 in kargil war
we shot down mig-21 in 2019 PAF surgical strike

The Bisons have been upgraded since their original purchase. Don't forget how they gave American Eagles a tough time, and even beat them on a few occasions in training exercises.

i have saved each and every image of wrcage and this episode i can find only mig-21 and mi-17 in all pics

we are very lucky once again we have got 100 new home made fighters in just 10 years and we can built as many as 300 . other side is in pressure new modern jets are very expensive bigger numbers are being reduced to smaller . indian defense minister openly said why only 36 rafales because india can not afford more . even if 120 rafales they will replace some 400 fighters or more .allah blessed us with good PAF brains otherwise we were also in deep mess today loaded with a-5 mirages and f-7s with few f-16.hope we will quickly remove our older mirages and f-17 with thunders .

its simple. mig 21 with BVR missile is a decent interceptor for a third world country. there were not only mig 21 but also su 30 in the region. indians most likely were not expecting a PAF response so quickly that too in day time so it seems they lowered their guard a bit. indians didnt send their jets inside pak at the first moment. they were lured into pak air space. when the pak JFTs bombed indian ground targets migs and sukois were sent to intercept them .JFT turned back and the indians in anger or in emotions made a mistake or chasing them inside pak air space where the falcons and more JFT with air to air missiles were waiting for the indians to make that mistake which they did and paid the price by losing 1 mig 21 ,1 su 30 and three pilots ejected. one was caught by pakistani forces and the other two landed in india. if paf jets would have made the same mistake on the night before when the indian mirages struck inside pak i am sure pak jets would have faced the same fate . sukhois would have shot them down but paf acted sensibly and more professionally.

This assessment makes perfect sense. I was thinking the same. IAF wasn't expecting a response so soon. formation of JFTs went in bombed and brought back migs on their tails, killed by AIM RAAMs from f16 waiting inside PAK airspace. exactly what IAF did in balakot strike. PAF didn't make the mistake of chasing them. IAF made the mistake because they have loads of jets and they are willing to sacrifice some. IAF air marshall clearly said that IAF used their numerical superiority over PAF.

There are many reasons why they sent a MiG
1:They were underestimating us
2:False sense of superiority complex
3:If things go haywire better to lose a mig then a SU-30,etc.
4: Poor planning

Indian SU-30 MKI was also sent but was taken down by Pakistan's JF-17 thunder.

very obvious. they were trying to protect the su30mki that was on a bombing run by sending the mig21bis along with it to provide air cover. It was a gamble that failed. gamble cuz they were hoping that the PAF would get busy in taking out the mig21 while the su30 make its bombing run and get away safely. failed because Pakistan Air Force called out their gamble and took out both the mig21 AND the su30. rumor also has it that PAF took out that mi17 as well.

they could've sent the su30 under the cover of more modern interceptors, mirage2000 or the mig29 but that would've been a bigger gamble since the iaf was still in the "test and then tread" mode. if the bombing run was a success and if the su30 and the mig21 had made it back safely THEN we could've expected the next attack to be in the cover of mig29s and/or mirage2000s. But now that both of them got shot down, the indians are getting really cold feet about sending in mig29s and mirage2000s. this is probably the reason why putin called modi; probably cursed the living sh!t outta that jackass for ruining the su30 image. explains why the indians are trying the damndest to some how hide the fact that the su30 was shot down right in the beginning of the war.

In human terms, taking out the su30 and the mig21 can be considered as a double bitchslap while taking out the mi17 can be considered as a warning after the double bitchslap that "aynda say apni auqaat may rehna"!

Mig 21 is an excellent intercepter and with new upgraded avionics and BVR capability. Its a very good aircraft for interception as compared to su 30 or mirage .

Twin engine aircraft are very heavy and use for ground operations. Mirage too is a heavy strike fighter.

Mig-21 and F7 , F-16 , Jf-17 , Griphen and F-21 these are small single engine aircraft very agile and best suited for interception and air to air combat. Also its least visible on radar because of its small size.

Mig-21 and f-16 were the best intercepteors or air superiorty fighters for last 40 years. Mainly because no other option better than these ever came up.

With new fighters like rafale, j-10 , jf,17 , F-21 and f-35 coming up things will change but for next 5. Years mig 21 and f-7 type aircraft will still be used until end of their life frame.

There is nothing better than mig 21 for interceptions in indian inventory until rafale or tejas become reality.

For pakistan JF-17 has already taken that role and is a newer generation aircraft.

Pakistan uses license built mig-21 of chinese origin called F-7PG. Although much more modern upgrades and capable than indian MiG 21.

slight correction, rafale is not single engined, its twin engined.
