Pak wants Indian aid to be routed through United Nations

After vacillating on India's offer of $5 million aid for victims of Pakistan's devastating floods for over two weeks, Islamabad has decided not to directly accept the assistance and instead asked that it should be routed through the United Nations.

"We suggested to India to send the aid money via the UN, as many of its agencies are also working (in flood relief operations in Pakistan)," foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit told the media.

The decision to route the aid through the UN was made as part of Pakistan's policies, Basit said.

He also said the government had "commended" India's offer of aid.

The offer was initially conveyed by external affairs minister SM Krishna to his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi during a phone conversation on August 13.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh reiterated the offer when he called his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani on August 19.

The acceptance of the offer was finally announced by Qureshi on August 20 during a visit to the US to drum up aid for flood victims from the international community.

Sources said Pakistan's foreign office had formally informed India through diplomatic channels that the aid should be donated to the UN's appeal for $460 million for an emergency response plan.

Following Qureshi's acceptance of the offer, which observers said was the result of pressure from the US, the foreign office held intensive deliberations on modalities for accepting the Indian assistance.

Over the past few days, several media reports quoting unnamed Foreign Office officials had said that Pakistan could accept the Indian aid only through the UN.

Sections of the Pakistani media that are critical of India had openly called for the aid to be rejected as it was linked to "Kashmiri blood" a reference to the deaths during violent protests in Jammu and Kashmir.

Some media commentators said the amount offered by India was paltry. They also said India could have offered more assistance as its economy is growing.

Media reports also said the powerful military establishment was of the opinion that Indian aid should come through the UN.
:hitwall:

Asked about the Indian offer at a recent news conference, Qureshi had referred to the "different nature of relations" with India and sensitivities involved in bilateral ties.

The floods have killed over 1,700 people and affected 20 million in Pakistan. Around 1.2 million homes have been destroyed or damaged.

Pak wants Indian aid to be routed through United Nations - India - DNA

why they are playing politics on dead bodies?????

why don't they allow aid and relief to reach the affected people.
:hitwall::hitwall:

So What's wrong with it?I thought Indians were accusing Pakistani Government few weeks ago here how they will misuse aid etc so now GOP is asking for aid to be routed through UN and you are angry?Hypocrisy.Pakistan can do whatever you want and it is a good step otherwise your media might even come up with fantasy stories like Pakistan gave 5 million which india gave to pakistan to LET etc.

screw it, if they dont want it - forget about the whole thing.

Indian Govt. should only give it to the Pak govt. not through 3rd parties.

Pakistan can take care of its people without any Aid.

I want the aid to be routed to the poor and needy in Pakistan.

There shouldnt be any problem in this. Route it thru UN. Whatever it takes for it to reach the intended recepients.

I think I saw a comment from Krishna on accepting this modality..

I agree with Patriot here..we can route through UN the aid money..it will ensure that the money will spend on the right people ..lets do it..if they dont want it directly then nothing we can do about it..if we wanted to help the poor then we dont mind whether we are giving it indirectly or directly as the money will reach the victims..

@Patriot: its not Indian media only who is criticizing you on how you guys spend the disaster money last time..and even the small charity organisations who is donating small money have the right to know how their money is spend..

It should be fine and no one is complaining.

Even the article doesnt seem to be blaming about it, just reporting it . But what with some Pakistani members , just the sound of Indian aid is making them crazy.

i don't think it should make any difference. if they want it to be routed via UN, then let it be. Atleast it won't be going to the coffers of few elites. end of they day this aid is suppose to help the victims, what difference it makes wether it's distributed through GOP or UN??

Hey, being a think thank, I really looked up to you, and I believe we should behave in a more civilised manner. I can already see Seiko, and Karan agreeing with us why this aid should be routed. Hopefully, the other Indians can understand.

Every poster has agreed , even tone of the article is just reporting the event.

But some so ppl are s utterly prejudiced and biased that they forget to even read the posts before blabbering.

Manmohan singh will do everything to benefit pakistan. He have said we will offer more aid if they want and is ready to send it through UN.

But, it raises two very valid points that must be highlighted and can't be ignored.

1. When US or KSA or China is sending aid directly and material bearing their tag and sign why should we not get same equal treatment???? Also, what about goodwill gesture.

2. This question is about their intentions about peace and friendship, when they don't stop from playing politics over dead bodies how we Indian fools thinks that they want peace and friendship.
