Nice to meet you Ortis,

Glad to have you here @Ortis

Well, I have no idea about the future but United Kingdom has a solid socially aware society. Even our right wing probably would fall somewhere on the left of the political spectrum in USA. In addition political parties are very much based on grassroots. This is especially so of the Labour Party which effectively is financed by workes unions. This the system is more in touch with what the average citizen wants rather than big business or bankers. That is not to say they weild enormous influence but by US standards they are on a tight leash. We just had Brexit despite big business doing everything to oppose it.

I also find it weird how a country of 300 million people can only have two political parties that appear to have differance that is shades of grey.

Anyway @Ortis you have a great morning/day/night depending on your timezone.
The reason for that is the US does not have a parliamentary system like the UK, so third parties usually just end up taking votes from one of the major parties. This makes both sides of the political spectrum angry. In 2016, Trump won the presidency by winning Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania by a couple of tens of thousands of votes each. The green party candidate, Jill Stein, won an equivalent number number of votes. The green party is basically a socialist party to the left of the Dems. Conversely, the libertarians typically take votes from the Republicans.

The US is also unique in that we use the electoral college system and we directly elect both chambers of the legislative branch by popular vote. However, another key difference is the US has something called primaries, where candidates from both primaries compete to win the nomination of their parties. The way they are selected is they run against each other similar to a general election and are elected by voters who typically have to be registered under that party(though the rules vary by state). This causes extremism within both parties because oftentimes candidates accuse each other of not being conservative/liberal enough. There are also some districts and states that are so partisan, that whoever wins their party's primary will almost certainly win the general election. That is how Manhattan elected a 29-year old with no work experience other than being a waitress and bartender and who can barely locate Israel on a map got elected to represent them in Congress. This is also how Roy Moore got nominated(although he proved that their are some scandals so big that partisanship cannot overcome it).
If you want a good idea of how divided the country has become, just look at some of the political ads that ran this election cycle. I started a thread on it.

Sorry if I gave you too much explanation, but I am very interested in the US government, and US politics.
Manhatten. And we don't intend to go beyond New York state. I think 7 days is not enough for all of USA.
you should come to Florida sometime, the weather is much nicer, and our government is not completely insane.
You should also check out some of the US National Parks. Personally, I am not into big cities and much prefer exploring small towns and rural areas and national parks. I have been to both NY and London though, and they are pretty similar. Oh and about the airports, you are correct that immigration and customs is very efficient. Howecer, the TSA(in charge of airport security) is one of the most incompetent government agencies in the world. Most of the "agents" can barely speak English and have no idea what they are ddoing, which is not surprising because they are not even real cops. So be prepared to deal with a lot of BS in that regard.
It is. Possibly too left and liberal by US standards but it's a great place. A country should be about it's citizens. Look after the infirm, the poor and weak. Who gives a toss about empire and domination of foreign countries. And yes, right now it's raining in damp, wet Yorkshire. But we are used to it.
That may be true, but can you own guns in the UK?:usflag:

I am right across the East River from Manhattan lol and you will be landing at JFK Airport which is in Queens lol and I am in NYC, so if you need any tour guide to show you around I have friends who work in the Tour industry and if you want to meet up let me know also since Public Transport is okay yes it smells like piss but its gets you somewhere for $2.75 Metro Card you can be in the Bronx,Brooklyn,Uptown,Downtown and Queens all depends on "Train Traffic" my suggest for you skip Time Square yes its been clean but it all full of annoying tourists and screens its like Picidilly Circus in London check out Queens , and Downtown Brooklyn, also do take the Staten Island Ferry as well.

That's great I was born and raised in Queens,NYC is okay I am just bored of NYC and the US I rather be in Malaysia or Singapore than here which I plan to once I finish college here, Crime has been down since the 1990s and Queens, Brooklyn, and Harlem in Manhattan have been cleaned up and the areas are in the millions and we have rich buyers from all over buying property in areas that use to be very s...ity I mean Long Island City in Queens was filled with Dirty Warehouses and graffiti back in the mid 2000s now its all condos and Skyscrapers now

New York State and California are known to be pretty left but dont let that fool you there are parts of this state that are deep red or center here Staten Island which is part of NYC is very Republican and Trump Country so many of the NYC Suburbs like Long Island as well.

Yeah bee look out for trolls from all over the world but you will get use to it
Didn't Staten Island just vote out its Republican US Rep? yeah there are still some ultra-conservative areas in upstate NY, but the state as a whole is becoming more and more democratic.

Not 'weird' at all.

The US uses the 'first past the post' (FPTP) electoral system...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-past-the-post_voting

Most people do not know it, but the Communist Party of the USA (CPUSA) is a legal entity and quite alive.

http://www.cpusa.org/

But regarding the FPTP electoral system, under FPTP, the electorate tends to stabilize to two parties, or more accurately, two MAJOR parties.

To illustrate, using 100 voters as an example.

If you win 51 votes, you get to represent all 100 voters under FPTP. However, under proportional representation, there must be a law that says if you win 51 votes, you represent 51 voters. YOU get a seat in government. The other 49 voters must chose their own representatives. Of those 49 voters, some may chose the Green Party, or whatever name. If a party have too few members, those members may have to caucus (ally) with another party, hence the word 'proportional'. The threshold for that is arbitrary. The law may say a party must have at least %10 of the general population in order for that party to have a seat in government. Or the law may say %20 or even higher.

The reality is that under FPTP, each of the two dominant parties have their own shades of grey, meaning some members do not agree with everything of the party's platform. So for the Republican Party, there are Libertarians inside. For the Democratic Party, there are Marxists inside. But for the Libertarians and the Marxists, they usually caucus (ally) with the dominant instead of standing on their own.

There are no laws that specified the US can have only two parties so not only in theory but also in practice, the US is a multi-party politics country. The problem is that the minor parties have to convince the general populace of their worthiness. If the CPUSA gain enough supporters, eventually the system will stabilize out to Communist vs Republicans or Communist vs Democrats. But the burden of convincing people rests upon the party themselves.

Trump still has high support there but the Current Congressman was a d..ick and he was getting paid by the corporate lobby and it was tight race Trump is popular in SI but the Congressman and the Staten Island GOP is despised because in NYC Political Machines in bothe the Democratic and Republican parties prevent good candidates from coming up however in 2018 we saw the machine weakend by Primaries in both parties ousting or close to ousting establishment types

oh ueah i forgot to mention jfk and newark are shit. I found chhatrapti shivaji intenational in mumbai to be miles ahead in teems of infra and cleanliness. Thee are some good airports though Orlando Mco airport is pretty good. The worst us airport i have been too was Las vegas their airport makes jfk look clean and well run

And you are so correct about tsa"agents" Most of them are women and minoroties who can barely speak english. They also look like trash. This summer i visited some relatives in san franciso and most of the male tsa agents had dreadlocks and man braids. Bunch of jokes.
