Aoa, I am a BSIT student and soon I would be in final year of my degree program. As I am an IT student so we have some restrictions for going towards hardware related projects. Considering only software in our FYP I want some suggestions on selecting a defence/military related final yeat project.

Need some suggestions please.

Thanks

You can go for many things a block chain based messaging service.

A facial recognition and intruder system you could add the element of cloud and have multiple computers run it.
Web GIS (look it up its a good field)
Object tracking systems.
You can also take a look in cryptography.

At the end i would advise you to pick the topic that you are interested in that is you want to take that as profession e.g Asp , c#, php or other languages. Although your goal of going towards the military defence type system is good but you have to take stock of reality as well.

Take a look at the market trends see what jobs are available in the field and what type of skills they require and try to apply those skills to your FYP.

Hope it helps

I also think it might be easier to design something the solves problems in Civilian life.

Make a software to spy on peoples mobile devices ,computers giving access to even those areas which cant be accessed by already available softwares. , you will have hugest profits from insecure gfs, bfs, husbands and wives.

Go for a image processing object recognition project using raspberry Pi kit or use a PC with a few cameras. How about a robot position system using a few rf or ultrasound transmitters? Millions of interesting projects you can do. Another one is use your mobile phone GPS to control and route the path of a model robot or car?

Build an app and name it Qarz-e-Hasna. Its main features should be like crowdfunding websites but with an added feature of returning money back to the sender after the grant period has expired. You can come back and thank me later.

There are acoustic based sniper locator systems that have been around for a while. Basically a powerful listening device picks up on the sound of the gunshot being fired from a sniper and tries to hone in on the location. They work well and so far have been predominantly used on vehicles...but i think they can now be taken to the next step...

Next step should be(that u can do as ur project)...wearable acoustic sensors. The soldiers will have them on their bodies...and some central software can gather the data from these and process it to locate enemies.

So for example imagine a team of Pak soldiers carrying out some anti terror op. They are in an urban environment...and enemies are firing at them from various locations(including ARs and they might even have Snipers positioned). The soldiers are behind cover...engaged in a firefight. The acoustic sensors on soldier A pick up the acoustic signature of bullets flying around...and an algorithm accounts for the bullets being fired from soldier A himself(so that the soldier's position doesn't get marked as hostile fire). It will also have to take into account the soldier's movement bcuz the acoustic signature of incoming bullets will change depending on the position of the soldier(this accounting for movement is already done on vehicles where these acoustic systems are used). Other sensors on other soldiers also pick up the data from their respective positions...all of this gets fed to some central processing unit where it essentially tries to pin point the exact(or a good approximate) enemy positions by sort of triangulating it(data from multiple soldiers spread out). The enemy positions data then gets shared with the soldiers...the goal would be to make all this happen fast enough so that it's in "real time". The soldiers can be wearing AR glasses so that the enemy position gets superimposed and highlighted red while friendlies in blue or something like that. Or if there's Pak army snipers then they can use that data to take out hostiles.

I hope that made sense. This would essentially be an awesome friend and foe system which would light up enemies and give away their positions as soon as they fire and provide real time data on targets. It would be immensely helpful in COIN operations and save lives of soldiers.

I would like other members to scrutinize this idea specially professionals who may have experience in this type of work. Please tag those members if u know any...

In USA they have microphones placed in gun crime areas to detect gun shot sounds, specially trained personnel listen in and inform the police of the location.

Military all around the world use artillery tracking and location radars to pin point source of artillery an rocket fire.

None as precise as what I'm discussing here

Artillery location is easier to detect bcuz artillery rounds follow a parabolic trajectory...this isn't the same situation as being in a gunfight in an urban environment during a COIN op.

What I'm talking about is something like this
https://newatlas.com/go/4497/

except instead of having the system on board vehicles...if it could be made smaller and sort of distributed. So that instead of one giant device(with all its sensors) mounted on a vehicle...instead it would be a bunch of different sensors(among other things) distributed among a team of soldiers(as wearables like embedded in a vest or something). These sensors would pool their data together and perform the same function essentially, which is to identify the location from where the soldiers are being fired at...in real time.

In an urban environment soldiers often have to dismount from their vehicles and clear an area building by building...having a system like this that's not tied to a vehicle ensures they still receive real time data on enemy position even without having a vehicle(with such a system) in close proximity. It would be the kind of difference there is between a landline and a cell phone. One is bulky and not portable enough...the other is portable enough that u always have it on the go.

Secondly, to share the enemy location data in a more user friendly way...it can be integrated with AR goggles...something like this...watch from 1:30 to 1:40

This would give a huge edge to Pak soldiers in COIN ops.

In theory it sounds good but in practice it is a little more complicated. Yes can be done, requires a lot of signal processing from real time data received from the directional microphones and then huge amounts of computing to ensure the map is updated and kept accurate. They would have to filter the echoes from the source sounds and I suppose could connect the return gunfire to the targets. Any such information is of tactical advantage on the battle field.

Yes of course it's not an easy task...and would require quite a bit of R&D and a decent amount of funding...but I don't think such a system exists yet. Even if it does and some armies have it, it's certainly not made public and PA doesn't have it. It would definitely be an edge for PA to have it and it can be an export success too.

In any case OP doesn't need to create a whole complete system. He can create a rough prototype to show it works in practice...that's as far as his senior year project goes. Then if he so wishes he can demonstrate it to the military or private companies/investors and try to get funding for the development of a full fledged system.

I know UK army tried to develop such a system and it didn't work well and they abandoned it, but that was years ago and since then technology has advanced and may be more achievable now.

US army definitely has a working system like the one I provided that link for. It takes into account the vehicles's speed to account for the Doppler shift in the sound waves so that the resultant enemy location is accurate...that is if the vehicle is on the move. It also refreshes rather quickly...it would pick up a gunshot...compute location within seconds...and then go right back to listening again to try to provide as much real time data as possible of enemy locations. The only key difference here would be to miniaturize/distribute it among a team of soldiers so that u don't have to lug it around on a vehicle...and the second relatively easier task is to tie it to an AR(augmented reality) headset so soldiers can have enemy locations superimposed in their real world view.
