UK may ease visa regime for Emiratis within months: envoy

UK and UAE governments in constructive discussion on visa regime, UK ambassador says

The UAE and UK have been engaged in a very constructive discussion on visa rules for Emiratis and the ongoing process will reach a conclusion within months, Dominic Jermey, the British ambassador in the UAE, said on Sunday.

“There is an ongoing process between the two governments that is really important, very constructive and that will reach a conclusion in due course, but not by next week,” Jermey said as he briefed the media on the state visit President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan will pay to the UK from April 30 to May 1 upon an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II.

This is the first state visit of Shaikh Khalifa to the UK since the visit of Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1989.

It follows on from a trip to the UAE by the Queen and Prince Philip in 2010, when the two nations reaffirmed the 1971 Treaty of Friendship. That was their first visit since 1979.

The ambassador, however, did not want to jump to conclusions over the outcome of any visa-related decision. “The UAE’s negotiation and diplomacy on this issue have been superb. I take my hat off to the UAE on this one and that’s why I am pleased that there is a very constructive conversation on that one,” he said.

The UAE’s government and people have arguing that as the two governments debate major issues of defence, nuclear and trade cooperation, and education and cultural ties are made more effective, it is also important that the visa regime should be made truly reciprocal.

Jermey said from the UK’s viewpoint, it looks at its border security from a global perspective. “But it is not a fast-moving discussion with any country. When I say there is a constructive conversation between the UK and the UAE that is moving along in a very … I cannot say it in any other way, a constructive way, that is exactly what I mean,” Jermey said.

Jermey said the Queen will host Shaikh Khalifa at Windsor Castle and hold a state lunch in his honour on the President’s first state visit to the country. “The pretty exceptional visit will be a celebration of relationship between the two peoples. It is a significant personal moment in the warm relationship between President Khalifa and the Queen, as well as a milestone in the bilateral relationship between our two countries,” the UK ambassador said.

“Shaikh Khalifa will be travelling in horse throne carriages to Windsor for a formal welcome from the queen. At Windsor Castle, a formal state luncheon will be hosted with all the great and good of the UK attending. Shaikh Khalifa will also review a Guard of Honour.

On the second day of the state visit, Shaikh khalifa will meet the British prime minister, David Cameron, at 10 Downing Street.

Cameron visited the UAE last November, when the two nations agreed to cooperation in areas such as trade, defence and climate change.

Shaikh Khalifa will also lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown warrior in Westminster Abbey and have tea with Prince Charles at Clarence House.

Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, had earlier said: “Shaikh Khalifa’s official visit to the UK comes as a response to the invitation extended by Queen Elizabeth II. The visit is also a witness to the deep historical relations binding the two countries together and the great ongoing cooperation between the two countries.”

Shaikh Abdullah added that the UAE under the wise leadership of Shaikh Khalifa is committed to strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries on all levels, while especially concentrating on trade, education, regional and international security.

The UAE and UK are seeking to enhance trade to reach Dh70 billion in 2015. The UAE is considered the biggest importer from the UK in the Middle East and North Africa. UK exports to the UAE grew by 9 per cent last year. There are 170 air flights between the two countries every week.

Jermey said bilateral trade was around £11 billion (Dh61.50 billion) and the two countries were targeting to reach £12 billion in the near future.

He said there were around 4,000 British companies in the UAE and more than 100,000 British expatriates living and working in the country. The UAE also receives more than one million British tourists every year, and 30,000 UAE nationals visit the UK as tourists each year, he said.

He added the UAE was an important investor in the UK economy. Large sums of capital are pumped into the economy by the UAE and work opportunities are provided and contributing to long-term economic growth.

The value of UAE investments in the UK exceed £5 billion. These investments include the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) in the North Sea, the Dubai International Ports projects in London Gate Way, which is one of the biggest individual projects in the UK, offering 35,000 jobs, and Dubai International Ports Containers Station – Southampton which is a joint venture between Dubai International Ports and Associated British Ports, among many others.

FNC presses for on-arrival foreign visas for Emiratis

Member of the FNC to demand Emiratis get equal visa status

A member of the Federal National Council is to demand that Emiratis be granted equal treatment by the 34 countries whose citizens are granted a visa on arrival.

Marwan Ahmad Bin Galitha, a member from Dubai, will put a question to Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, on Tuesday, on the outcome of the effort to exempt UAE citizens from visa requirements by these countries.

Emiratis facing delays in obtaining a Schengen and other visas are demanding that the UAE government stop granting visas on arrival to citizens of countries that fail to apply equal treatment to UAE citizens.

Shaikh Abdullah told a news conference on Sunday the free visa status with Schengen countries took time. “The UAE has been negotiating this issue with countries concerned for years now,” Shaikh Abdullah said.

In February, Shaikh Abdullah Bin Mohammad Bin Butti Al Hamed, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the UAE was making intensive diplomatic efforts with the European Union to exempt Emiratis from the Schengen visa.

“The UAE wishes to express its appreciation over the fact that its request to be included among the countries whose citizens do not require a visa to travel to the Schengen area is currently under serious consideration by the European Union,” he said.

Al Hamed said the main arguments that underpin the UAE’s request are: Visa-free access will further facilitate a trade relationship between the UAE and the Schengen area that currently stands at more than $40 billion (Dh146.9 billion) — more than $60 billion for the whole European Union); exempting the UAE would send a positive signal for greater cultural openness towards the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Al Hamed said that exemption fom the visa would facilitate the travel of citizens of the state to Schengen. “It will mutually benefit all parties and will strengthen relations of cooperation and friendship in various fields between the UAE and the Schengen countries.”

The Foreign Minister will answer another question on the breach of international laws by certain embassies when they set minimum wages for housemaids.

Rashid Al Shuraiqi, a member from Ras Al Khaimah, will ask Suhail Mohammad Al Mazroui, Minister of Energy, about the national strategy on the supply of electricity and water.

Ali Eisa Al Nuaimi, a member from Ajman, will put a question to Saqr Gobash Saeed Gobash, Minister of Labour, on its effort to deport illegal workers. Al Nuaimi will put another question to the National Media Council on the regulation of classifieds. The House will also debate the National Media Council’s policy on media legislation.

Visa-free travel for Emiratis to Schengen countries

Schengen and UK agree to exempt Emiratis from entry visa

Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, told the Federal National Council yesterday that the next 12 months will see “positive results” regarding the proposal to exempt UAE citizens from Schengen countries and visas.

“Our talks with the EU yielded that Schengen countries had agreed in principle to exempt Emiratis from entry visa. They submitted a motion to the commissioner concerned and we are waiting for a recommendation [to be] submitted to the European parliament for approval,” Shaikh Abdullah said.

He added within the next 12 months, “there will be positive results,” hinting the visa requirement could be waived by the Schengen countries and the UK, but stopping short of giving a definitive deadline. Japan may also be easing visa requirements, where diplomats will be granted visa-free entry and multiple-entry visas will be granted to citizens.

Shaikh Abdullah said 55 countries were granting Emiratis visa-free entry, which was fairly good but did not live up to his expectations.

A member of the FNC had demanded earlier that Emiratis be granted equal treatment by the 34 countries whose citizens are granted a visa on arrival.

Marwan Ahmad Bin Galitha, a member from Dubai, put a question to Shaikh Abdullah on the outcome of the effort to exempt UAE citizens from visa requirements by these countries.

Shaikh Abdullah said in 2001 that the cabinet had exempted citizens of 33 countries from entry visa to boost tourism. The move was a huge boost to tourism and the UAE was ranked last year as the largest tourist destination in the Arab world.

Emiratis facing delays in obtaining a Schengen and other visas are demanding that the UAE government stop granting visas-on-arrival to citizens of countries that fail to apply equal treatment to UAE citizens.

Equal treatment

Shaikh Abdullah said countries that were granted a visa-free status softened their stance when the UAE imposed a visa on their diplomats.

“That was an indication that the nation would impose a visa on citizens of countries which failed to grant the UAE equal treatment.”

Bin Galitha suggested that the presence of Emiratis in visa service-provider offices should be boosted, which Shaikh Abdulllah agreed was a good suggestion and it would be considered.

Tourists from the following countries are offered on-arrival visas to the UAE: Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Brunei, United Kingdom, France, Liechtenstein, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Paraguay, Ireland, Greece, Finland, Spain, Monaco, Vatican, Iceland, Andorra and others.

UK backing visa-free Euro travel for Emiratis

The European Parliament will consider granting Emiratis visa-free entry to the European Schengen area next year, the Foreign Minister told the FNC yesterday.

Over the past year the UAE has increased its efforts to win visa-free entry to the Schengen area – a group of 26 countries in western Europe.

In February, Sheikh Abdullah Al Hamed, undersecretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said talks with the European Union had been going on for more than a year. While many Schengen states had expressed their support, the decision lay with the European Commission and EU parliament, he said.

Yesterday the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, told council members that the visit last month to the UK by the President, Sheikh Khalifa, had a positive effect in strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

Visa-free travel could soon be a reality, he said. “The UK said they will ... push for UAE nationals during this year,” he said.

Sheikh Abdullah thanked council members for their part in lobbying the EU parliament. “We hope in the next 12 months the EU parliament looks [positively] on lifting Schengen requirements from UAE nationals,” he said.

Marwan bin Ghalita (Dubai) pointed out that it had been 12 years since the UAE granted visa-free entry to the citizens of more than 30 countries. He said the agreement also entailed reciprocity.

Mr bin Ghalita said many Emiratis had asked him what the UAE had received in return for granting such wide visa-free entry.

“A national today, for 34 countries they must go to a service provider to get a visa,” he said, “and then they have to go more than once, and they may get the visa or not.”

Sheikh Abdullah said the council’s stance on this issue was clear and was supportive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ goals. “But there are good indications,” he said.

Sheikh Abdullah said it was possible that there would be real change by next summer, with Emiratis potentially not needing a visa to enter the UK or Schengen countries.

The ministry was also working to relax Japan’s visa process, he said, noting that visas for Japan were “very difficult” to obtain.

“There is development between us and them,” he said.

Mr bin Ghalita suggested that visa offices be headed by Emiratis so that they can deal with visa applications. Sheikh Abdullah said it was a “good idea” that he would study.

Easier EU travel for Emiratis a step closer

Panel approves report lifting entry permit requirements for UAE citizens

The European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs approved a report on Thursday recommending that EU entry permit requirements for Emiratis should be abolished.

Mariya Gabriel, the rapporteur of the report, told a meeting of the committee yesterday that the UAE is interested in strengthening ties with Europe.

“There is no risk of illegal immigration. Trips made by UAE nationals to Europe are mainly for business, tourism, studies or health care,” Gabriel said stressing that the UAE will comply with total reciprocity regarding the visa waiving.

This would make the UAE the first Arab country whose nationals will enjoy visa-free travel to the EU.

An official from the EU Commission had told the meeting that the EU’s executive body was in favour of lifting the visa requirements for UAE citizens.

The committee will vote on the report later this month and after that the report will go before the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers for their approval by mid-2014.

Giorgio Starace, Italian Ambassador to the UAE, told Gulf News that he is confident that the proposal to grant an entry visa exemption for UAE citizens visiting Schengen countries will be approved by the European Union.

Italy’s support

“Most of the EU nations, including Italy, have already supported the UAE’s proposal. Italy will strongly lobby for the UAE in the next stages of voting,” he said.

Starace said the Italian foreign minister has already sent a letter to the UAE foreign minister, expressing Italy’s strong support in this regard. France has also supported the UAE’s proposal.

In May, Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed his gratitude to the French Foreign Minister for his support at an event in Abu Dhabi. “Visa exemption for Emiratis in European Union member countries is one of the priorities of our foreign policy. France’s support of our efforts received appreciation and gratitude from our side.”

Emiratis allowed visa-free travel to Schengen area

The European Parliament (EP) has voted today to allow visa-free travel for UAE citizens to countries in the Schengen Area in Europe.

This came during a meeting held today in Strasbourg with a majority vote of 523 out of 577 EU representatives. The EU’s endorsement of the visa waiver status for UAE citizens travelling to Schengen Area is deemed as crucial stage which will be followed by setting up of a mechanism to implement the decision.

The procedural arrangements to put the decision in to effect will start by setting up of a joint working team of the UAE and EU, who will implement the decision as soon as possible.

The team will intensify its efforts to speed up the procedure of the implementation of decision as a prelude to the final announcement to allow UAE citizens visa free travel to Schengen Area.

Dr Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from Strasbourg congratulated the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai for this great achievement saying that this historic vote is the result of two years of organised and relentless work which was diligently led by Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, who followed all its stages from the beginning.

Today’s vote is a reflection of the good reputation enjoyed by the UAE and its achievements on the regional and global levels, Mr. Gargash stated and added that the UAE will be the first Arab country who got visa waiver for Schengen countries.

He remarked that concrete achievement of the citizens will make it easier for them to travel freely and move in 27 European countries in implementation to the UAE approach that put Emirati citizens as a priority for its efforts and activities.

He added that what has been achieved today came through comprehensive and collective efforts led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its diplomatic missions abroad in addition to the country’s concerned institutions, particularly the Ministry of Interior.

He concluded by hailing the important role played by Mr. Sulaiman Hamed Al Mazroui, UAE Ambassador to Belgium and embassy staff there.

The decision affirms UAE’s strong and strategic political and economic relations with EU, where the trade and investment between the parties have exceeded to 50 billion Euros.

The number of return flights between the UAE and Europe have reached 508 weekly and there are more than 160,000 EU citizens living in the UAE, in addition to over 1.64 million visitors who come to the UAE annually according to 2012 figures.

Europe waives Schengen visa for UAE citizens

The country welcomed the overwhelming support of the European Parliament (EP) on Thursday allowing visa-free travel for UAE citizens to 27 countries in the Schengen area.

Emiratis will soon be exempt from visa requirements when visiting the EU member states for business or tourism for a period of 90 days.

Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said this was in recognition of the UAE rising status among nations and was due to the blessings of the late President, Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It also had strong backing from the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In an interview to Abu Dhabi TV, he said Emiratis had made their mark in Europe and their good conduct was worthy of emulation.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash lauded the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on the successful vote.

‘‘This historic vote is the result of two years of organised and relentless work which was diligently led by Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, who followed all its stages from the beginning,’’ he said.

The massive vote in favour of the visa waiver had 523 of the 577 European Members of Parliament (MEPs) backing the motion at a plenary session in Strasbourg. The EU parliamentary nod is crucial to setting up a mechanism on implementing the visa-free structure for UAE nationals.

Procedural arrangements will start with the setting up of a joint working team of the UAE and EU, who will implement the decision ‘‘as soon as possible’’.

‘‘I am pleased that once the necessary procedures are completed, nationals from 16 small island nations in the Caribbean and Pacific regions, the United Arab Emirates, Peru and Colombia will be able to come to the Schengen area without a visa — be it for business, touristic or family visit purposes. This will open up opportunities and advantages also for EU citizens, as any existing visa requirement for EU citizens to travel to these countries will be eliminated,’’ said European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström, in a statement.

“The European Parliament’s decision to exempt Emirati nationals from Schengen visa requirement will enable increased visitor traffic from the UAE to the region. For hundreds of Emiratis travelling to the Schengen area for business, tourist, medical treatment purpose, the visa waiver comes as a big relief,” said Ahmed Salem, a bank employee.

Strategic political and economic relations between the EU and the UAE are strong, with trade and investment between the two worth 50 billion Euros.

More than 160,000 EU citizens live in the UAE and 1.64 million European visit the country annually, according to 2012 figures. Airlines operate 508 weekly flights between the UAE and Europe.

Earlier this month, the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament ratified the agreement between the Parliament and the Greek Presidency of the European Union, to amend regulations to exempt UAE citizens from obtaining a visa for 90 days.

First UAE travellers use UK electronic visa waiver

Travellers must complete their EVW online at least 48 hours before departure and present a printed copy on departure and again on arrival in the UK.

January 1 saw the first travellers to visit the UK using the Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW). This allows visits to the UK for up to six months without a visa.

So far, over 300 visa waiver applicants — including 170 Emirati, 107 Qatari and 102 Omani passport holders — have completed an EVW, with the number expected to increase during the coming months.

UK border force officials have been working through the night at local airports to assist airlines and travellers using the scheme.

Matt Heath, regional director for UK Visas and Immigration, said: “We’ve already seen really good uptake of the EVW scheme, it is simple to complete, free of charge and quicker than applying for a visa. When completing an EVW it is essential that the travellers enter their full name, spelt exactly as it appears in their passport together with their date of birth and exact flight details.”

With an EVW there is no requirement to provide biometrics, attend a visa application centre or hand in passports prior to travel. The document is issued immediately via a secure web site and can be obtained online from anywhere in the world for travel to the UK.

Dominic Jermey, British Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates said: “I’m delighted to see Emiratis start to use the Electronic Visa Waiver scheme. Introducing this scheme is a really important part of the drive by the British government to make relations between our two great nations ever closer — like all important relationships; it is our people who are at the heart of the long standing friendship between the UK and the UAE. This visa waiver offers a great alternative to a visa and can now make it easier for Emiratis to visit Britain. The UK looks forward to warmly welcoming more Emirati visitors for business and leisure.”

Travellers must complete their EVW online at least 48 hours before departure and present a printed copy on departure and again on arrival in the UK. The EVW is only valid for a single entry to the UK on the date and time specified.

UAE expects visa-on-arrival entry to 64 countries this year
Montenegro latest to offer facility; Schengen implementation awaited

The Republic of Montenegro has exempted UAE nationals from requiring a visa to enter the country, Foreign Ministry confirmed on Twitter, reported ‘Al Bayan’ newspaper.

Emiratis now join a list of 36 countries in the world to enter Montenegro without a visa.

This year will also witness the EU's decision to exclude UAE nationals from Schengen visa. Emiratis will be able to travel to 28 European member states.

This will take the number of countries in the world that allow citizens to enter without visa to 64.

Furthermore, nine countries grant visas to Emiratis at airports and ports of entry or through the internet.

Montenegro Embassy in Abu Dhabi said, the exemption of UAE nationals from prior visa requirements will help strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation in the fields including investment, tourism and transport.

UAE passport most powerful in Arab world
The highest-ranked passports are those of the US and the UK.

The Emirati passport has been ranked first among the Arab countries and 47th worldwide in the list of the most powerful passports in terms of how many countries can be visited without a visa, or by getting one upon arrival. The UAE passport grants its holder access to 72 countries.

Peru and Dominica shared the UAE’s 47th rank.

Saudi Arabia’s passport was ranked 57th on the list, with its holder having access to 61 countries. The Omani passport was ranked 63rd worldwide. It gives its holder access to 54 countries.

A passport from a country in good global standing is a powerful thing, allowing its holder to move across borders without dealing with the nightmarish bureaucracy of a visa application.

Arton Capital, a financial firm that says it “empowers individuals and families to become global citizens”, put together the ranking. The ranking sorts countries by the number of other countries a passport holder can visit without a visa or by attaining a visa upon arrival.

The highest-ranked passports are those of the US and the UK.

Languishing at the bottom of the list are Myanmar, the Palestinian territories and South Sudan.

Hassle-free travel for Emiratis to Europe
Citizens can travel to 34 countries without a visa after signing of pact between UAE and European Union

European travel for Emiratis has become much simpler following the formal signing of an agreement between the UAE and the European Union (EU) to waive visas for the Schengen area. This agreement, effective on Wednesday, essentially provides privileges to UAE citizens to travel to 34 countries with ease and without the need for electronic or online applications.

It comes more than a year after the European Parliament voted to allow visa-free travel to Europe for Emiratis to all 26 Schengen states (plus 8 countries where Schengen rules apply). It will allow UAE citizens multiple entries and a stay of up to 90 days within a period of 6 months or 180 days in the Schengen zone.

The signing took place at the Council of the European Union between UAE ambassador to the EU Sulaiman Al Mazroui and ambassador Ilze Juhansone, permanent representative of the Republic of Latvia and chairman of the Permanent Representatives Committee at the EU.

Speaking exclusively to Gulf News, Al Mazroui said: “This is a historical moment in relations between the UAE and the EU. The Schengen visa waiver agreement was an initiative that’s been there for three years and today it has been successfully concluded by the signing ceremony at the EU council.”

“Although the UAE was admitted last on the list of candidates for Schengen waiver, we got it first,” says Al Mazroui. This statement was also echoed by Mohammad Meer Al Raisi, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was also present at the signing.

Major achievement

Al Raisi told Gulf News this was a major diplomatic achievement: “The UAE has political influence globally and we enjoy strong relations with EU countries.” Al Raisi emphasised that EU countries will benefit from an increase in trade and investments as well as the number of tourists coming from the UAE. He thanked both Shaikh Abdullah [Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister] and Dr Anwar Gargash [UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs] for their direct involvement and hard work.

Al Raisi also wanted to address Emiratis directly, saying he hopes they will all be good ambassadors for their country, protective of their country’s reputation and respectful [and mindful] of the countries’ laws and regulations that they are visiting.

Commenting on why there was some delay in the actual signing the agreement, ambassador Al Mazroui said it was due to several factors including a tactical delay by the liberalisation and justice and committee to avoid entry by force of a few countries who wanted to put their name on the visa waiver list. Elections that took place in the European institutions (the parliament, council and the commission) as well as linguistic hiccups played a role as well.

Countries exempted

In terms of reciprocity, the UAE exempted 33 countries before this waiver initiative, which, according to Al Mazroui, was good for the UAE’s economy and it increased tourism and business and brought an influx of investment. Fifteen of the original EU countries were exempted in the 2001 UAE list. In March 2014, the UAE as a goodwill gesture exempted 13 EU states; Al Mazroui said this was a provisional, good message to the EU that the UAE is seeking reciprocity. “Today’s signature completes the process of reciprocity,” he said.

The UAE is by far the largest Arab trade partner with the EU — over €50 billion (Dh206 billion) of trade according to the latest figures.

Al Mazroui says the UAE being the second largest Arab economy is very important for the EU. Furthermore, there are 510 weekly flights between the UAE and the EU, which is a major indicator of the relationship.

Larger impact

Commenting on the larger impact of this diplomatic achievement, Al Mazroui said the UAE has been appreciated by the EU as a leader in the Gulf and the Middle East in general on all levels — as a partner in various political positions, in economic achievements, and as a safe haven for expats who live in the UAE and enjoy a high quality of life. For them, the UAE is an example of how a country in that region should be, he says.

Ambassador Juhansone in her statement at the signing that the negotiations rounds with the UAE went very smoothly. “I am confident we will keep having good cooperation between us and together we will ensure a smooth implementation of the agreement,” she said. Juhansone said UAE-EU ties will be strengthened as a result of this agreement.

The UAE is now working on the next steps to get visa waivers in other parts of the world. Al Raisi said their target is to one day, get Emiratis a visa waiver for all countries around the world.

Visa waiver a great diplomatic success
Decision is a recognition by the European Union of the UAE’s status and sustained achievement, Abdullah says

The decision to allow Emirati citizens to obtain Schengen visa on arrival in member countries is a recognition by the European Union to the UAE’s status and its sustained successes, Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, said on Wednesday.

Shaikh Abdullah’s comments came as he congratulated UAE leaders on the nation’s accomplishment. He said the EU decision was a great achievement for UAE diplomacy, which has proved itself as an outstanding model for its ability to influence and work in an integrated manner, apart from its ability to achieve supreme national interests at home and abroad.

Proven excellence

“This is not the first time that UAE diplomacy has proven its excellence. It had an important and influential role in the UAE’s winning bid to host the World Energy Conference in 2019 and the Dubai Expo 2020, in addition to Abu Dhabi’s hosting of the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency [Irena] in 2009,” Shaikh Abdullah said.

He stressed the decision of the European Parliament did not come from a vacuum, nor was it easily achieved. Behind it stood the wise policy of the UAE’s leadership that worked hard to build its spotless image abroad. He also pointed out that the decision involves several positive returns for UAE citizens that will facilitate their freedom to travel throughout the EU. It will also allows students the opportunity to get acquainted with European universities closely.

Shaikh Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Adviser and Deputy Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council, said the Schengen visa waiver was an overwhelming success for the UAE diplomacy. He also congratulated the UAE leaders on the achievement.

Shaikh Hazza said the decision was a result of the immeasurable efforts by the UAE Foreign Ministry led by Shaikh Abdullah and his outstanding team, and was the fruit of several years of handwork and devotion.

Emiratis can now travel through Europe without applying for visas after the European Parliament on Wednesday waived requirements.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs, applauded the move after the UAE and European Union signed a Schengen Area visa waiver agreement yesterday at a ceremony in Brussels.

The waiver allows UAE citizens to travel through the 26 Schengen countries without applying for visas, as well as eight non-Schengen states. 26+8= 34

“Our UAE citizens have the full right to feel proud of their leadership, which exerts every possible effort to take care of their welfare internally, as well as anywhere else in the world,” Sheikh Abdullah said.

“And they can be genuinely loyal to our dear country, which provides its citizens with a decent life that conforms to high international standards.”

The move makes the UAE the first Arab country to be granted free entry to the Schengen zone. It means Emiratis can stay in Schengen zone countries for 90 days in any 180-day period.

After years of pushing by UAE officials for visa-free travel, the first step was taken in February last year when the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour.

The 26 Schengen states are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Emiratis will also have visa-free access to eight non Schengen countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Romania, the Vatican, Andorra, San Marino and Monaco.

The UK and Ireland are not in the Schengen area but since the start of last year Emiratis have been able to apply online for a visa waiver for travel to the UK.

The Schengen agreement brings to more than 100 the number of countries for which Emiratis do not require a visa.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs this week released a list advising citizens on their rights and responsibilities under the waiver, and spelling out what it meant for them.

Emiratis welcomed the agreement. Sara Saeed, 33, a frequent traveller, said: “This is a relief. It saves a lot of time and money. I can now travel any time without the hassle of going to the embassy for a visa.”

Sheikh Abdullah said the deal was recognition of the status achieved by the UAE, and offered his congratulations to the leaders and people on the achievement.

“It will also allow our students more opportunity to know European universities better and choose whichever suits them best in the pursuit of their education,” he said.

He praised the admirable behaviour of UAE citizens while visiting European countries, noting they had been excellent ambassadors for their country. This “has been a decisive factor in the decision to exempt UAE citizens from the Schengen visa requirement”.

Sheikh Abdullah re-affirmed the desire of the UAE to establish effective and strong relations with important regional groupings. At the forefront of this is the EU, within the framework of the country’s active foreign policy, which seeks to build relations with all countries to serve the supreme national interest and enhance its presence both regionally and internationally.

He added that the passing of the resolution by the EU Parliament represented a major achievement for UAE diplomacy, which has proven itself to be an example of distinguished performance, thanks to its basic characteristics which include mobility and flexibility, the exertion of influence, making use of planning, and a comprehensive approach to work, as well as the ability to achieve the supreme national interests, both internally and externally.

Sheikh Abdullah also praised recent significant achievements such as the successful bid by the UAE to host the forthcoming International Energy Conference, in 2019 and the winning bid by Dubai to host the 2020 World Expo.
