No Problems in Acquiring Engines for JF-17 Aircraft : PAF Chief

*ttp://theasiandefence.blogspot.com/2010/07/no-problems-in-acquiring-engines-for-jf.html

Pakistan Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman has rubbished claims that production of JF-17 Thunder warplanes has been hit by problems relating to procurement of Russian engines and said the manufacturing of the fighter planes in joint collaboration with China was proceeding smoothly. The Air Chief was speaking to media on the occasion of his visit to Farnborough International Air Show where two PAF JF-17 aircraft are on static display.

There are no problems whatsoever regarding the supply of engines for these aircraft contrary what has been appearing in the international media, he asserted. The Air Chief who visited the site where two PAF planes are on display and met the pilots and the ground staff, said he has been encouraged by the positive response of friendly countries who have shown interest in the aircraft.

He said both Pakistan and China have evolved a joint strategy to sell these planes to the interested countries.

The President of China Aviation Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC), Li Yu Hai who was also present on the occasion categorically stated that they have received no information from Russia on suspending the further supply of 100 RD-93 engines.

The Pakistani Air Force chief added that China has also manufactured engines for this aircraft which are currently under testing and trials. We have to see how far these engines are successfully and then possibly induct them into JF-17.

He said Pakistan was looking to manufacture around 250 of these aircraft to replacing its present fleet of A-5s, FP-7 and Mirages.

According to Janes Defence Weekly, Egypt has launched negotiations with Pakistan in relation to licensed production of these single engine multimode fighter aircraft.

According to the magazine, the Russian defence manufacturers are facing strong competition from China vis-à-vis their MIG-29s which carry a price tag of US $ 35 million as compared to 10 million dollars for FC-1 fighters.

The magazine said MIG-29s are currently competing with FC-1s in an Egyptian tender on the delivery of 32 fighters while the Middle East country is also negotiating with Pakistan.

The Russian Federal Service for Military Technical Co-operation approved re-export of RD-93 engines to Egypt as part of the FC-1 fighter package in November 2007.

While the PAF chief was visiting static display of JF-17, overhead an array of latest Western fighter planes including the state-of-the-art F-22 Raptor, F-16, F-18, Euro fighter Typhoon, British-made Hawke trainer thrilled the crowd with their aeronautical characteristics during the flying display.

Pakistan plans to fly the JF-17 planes at the next 2012 show. In the meantime, these planes will also participate in the Singapore International Air Show next year.

The Commander of the Saudi Arabian Dharan Airbase also visited the site and evinced keen interest in JF-17. As he sat in the cockpit he was explained about its various features by wing commander Khalid who flew one of the planes from Pakistan. The PAF Chief also sat in the cockpit. Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Arif. Project, Director, of JF-17 was also present on the occasion.

Both Pakistan and China have set up a joint stall at the main exhibition hall and has been receiving numerous enquiries regarding the aircraft which has put on display for the first time at an international air show.
The Pakistan Air Force officially inducted its first JF-17 squadron on February 18 this year.

The JF-17 aircraft will be produced in blocks of 50 aircraft each where every succeeding block would be an upgraded version of the preceding block. Pakistan s share in co-production of the airframe of JF-17 aircraft would be more than 50%. Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra, has the capacity to roll-out 15-25 aircraft per year.-

that's something gud, every next batch will be upgraded which means it will reach maturity quite early.

Pakistan has 'no problems' acquiring RD-93 engine, says air force chief

Jon Grevatt Jane's Asia-Pacific Industry Reporter - Bangkok

Key Points
Pakistan has "no problems" in procuring Russian engines for the JF-17, according to Pakistan's air chief

Development of an alternative Chinese engine is progressing, however, says ACM Suleman

Pakistan is experiencing "no problems" in procuring the Klimov RD-93 jet engine from Russia in order to power the JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft, according to Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Pakistan's Air Force Chief of Staff.

Responding to reports that Russia has suspended the export of the engine to China - co-developer of the aircraft - ACM Suleman was quoted by state news in Islamabad as saying that Pakistan's production of the JF-17 was "proceeding smoothly.

"There are no problems whatsoever regarding the supply of engines for these aircraft," he said.

The report also quoted Li Yu Hai, the president of China Aviation Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC), as saying that China has received "no information from Russia on suspending the further supply of a second batch of 100 RD-93 engines".

Despite the apparent confidence about the supply of the engines, ACM Suleman stressed that China is developing an alternative, indigenously designed powerplant that will eventually replace the RD-93. This turbofan engine is widely believed to be the WS-13 Taishan, which is thought to be based on RD-93 technologies and is being developed by the Guizhou Aircraft Industry Corporation: a subsidiary of China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC). ACM Suleman said: "We have to see how far these engines are successfully and then possibly induct them into the JF-17."

It was reported earlier this month that Russia suspended the signing of a contract to supply a second batch of 100 RD-93 jet engines to China following protests from Mikhail Pogosyan, the director general of both MiG and Sukhoi. According to a report by Russian state news service RIA Novosti, Pogosyan protested against the sale, saying it would lead to stronger competition from China's cheaper FC-1 fighters, which are direct competitors of the MiG-29 'Fulcrum' aircraft.

The export of the RD-93 engine to Pakistan has also proved problematic in the past. Moscow's hesitancy about the arrangement is due to concerns centred on its long-standing defence relationship with India.

In May 2007, for instance, Russia bowed to pressure from New Delhi and restricted the use of its RD-93 engine in the JF-17 for Pakistan, only for it to change its mind a few months later. In February 2008 Yang Ying, the vice-president of China's National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC), told Jane's that Beijing had decided to place certain conditions on the deal to allow exports to Pakistan to continue.

Without revealing these conditions, Ying said: "We have consulted, co-ordinated and negotiated with Russia about the export of the engine. They have approved the export based on some conditions. It is a package deal and it is being successfully exported."

i think that for the first 100 aircrafts, PAF will stick to the basics.
it will be only in third block when the upgrads will start flowing. PAF need to improve on hardpoint and perhaps air-refueling probes on first priority, a better engine and radar may follow.

regadrs!

well karaara jawab to alll indians and russiand who were happy with the russsian ceo of mig and su that they dont want to selll us engines

I will be very happy when PAF will start producing its own indigenious engines for JF 17 inshallah...
:pakistan::pdf:

Yup. Pakistan should start as soon as possible on producing such engine so that Russia will not be able to black mail us anymore.

any updates about the engine for jf 17 that paf working in china ?

CATIC: China's technology can help the Russian RD-93 engines to improve

CATIC: China's technology can help Russia to improve the RD-93 engine
Core Tip: The latest issue of the United States, "Defense News Weekly" published an article called China Aviation Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC for short) Ma Zhiping, general manager, said during the Farnborough Air Show, China's technology can help the Russian-made RD93 engines to increase thrust, China hopes that the engine thrust to 9000 kg. He also said the RD93 is the first choice of Xiaolong, Russia agree to export all of the potential users of the State.

Xiaolong fighter to participate in Farnborough Air Show last week in the UK

Xiaolong used RD-93 engines. China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) Ma Zhiping, general manager of the position is very rare, users turn to help manufacturers improve products. This might have two reasons, first, before the Russian side in order to dispel the reports on the impact of export Xiaolong; second is Chinese-made WS-13 engine thrust than the RD-93 is indeed great, but the WS-13 has just not developed for export, because the early aircraft engines in service have higher failure rate.

Global Times - World Wide Web on July 27 reported July 26, 2010 published in the latest issue of "Defense News Weekly" magazine published UK's Pilkington (Tom Kington) article, entitled "China to the Russian thrown out the engine agreement." The following major elements:

The article first said that the Chinese aviation officials on their manufacturing capabilities have become so confident, so offered to help Russia improve aircraft engine thrust to increase sales. China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC), general manager of Ma Zhiping (Ma Zhiping) Speaking at the Farnborough Air Show during the Russian-made RD-93 aero engines, he said that China's technology can help increase the number of this engine the required thrust, "in our help, I hope to reach 9,000 kg of thrust, if we did this, would promote sales." at the Farnborough Air Show, two Chinese JF-17 fighter aircraft design first appeared in Western exhibitions, this aircraft from the Pakistan Air Force pilots, the aviation industry in Pakistan is also involved in the production, JF-17 from the 俄罗斯切尔内舍夫 (Chernyshyov) Machinery factory to sell the RD-93 engines to power . The air show, JF-17 fighters arrived in enough to show that the Chinese side as a fighter growing manufacturing firm and confident image, and Ma raise the aspirations of the Russian technology reflects the global trend of China (Air) a great power ambitions.

The article goes on to say, Mr. Ma's stance followed by Russia, "Sukhoi" and "MiG" general manager Mikhail - Pogosyan (Pogosyan) remarks, and as such is more noteworthy. Pogosyan recently had boasted to block the sale to China 100 RD-93 engines on the grounds that "China's export JF-17 fighter planes or hinder the export of Russian national." Unit 20 million U.S. dollars in China's JF-17 specifically for export. Pogosyan said last week in China in the recent test of a new fighter aircraft, Su -33, but is a "copy." Russia's defense export company (Rosoboronexport) Vice President Alexander - Mikheyev (Alexander Mikheyev) said without fear of a Chinese jet fighter competition, Russia will continue to meet the delivery to China RD-93 contract. Five years ago China purchased 100 RD-93, China hopes to sign soon after the end of the year or another 100 sales contracts, Pogo is the opposite of the second engine contract. Ma said that the first batch of 100 engines will be supplied to Pakistan's JF-17 aircraft orders or 6-7 lists some of the Asian and African countries (possible) order, last week, CATIC officials to Moscow (and Russia side) to discuss the second batch of orders for 100 engines, the aircraft exporting countries, the list has no problem, now they are in discussions to expand the list of target export countries.

The article said, if JF-17 prompted Moscow to reconsider the sale of Chinese-made fighter jets for the determination and impeding the RD-93 exports to China, there were reports that China is planning a larger thrust RD-93 replacement - WS-13 . Ma said that if Russian-made engine can still sell it, he preferred Russian-made engine, "I would like to RD-93 JF-17 is the preferred choice, but if they cease (supply), then we must reconsider." When asked whether to seek and Russia to cooperate in the WS-13 pm, Mr Ma said: "We discussed, but I prefer working with them in the work of RD-93 to enhance the performance, I would like to help us reach 9,000 kg of thrust. "

Pakistan Air Force JF-17 project manager, Air Force Major General Mohammad - Arif (Mohammed Arif), said the first batch of JF-17 fighter purchase contract is signed, the Pakistan Air Force now plans to sign next year in June the second batch of 50 aircraft , in the first and second batch of JF-17 assembly of the Russian-made engines on this issue, Russia, China and Pakistan is not divided. Pakistan Air Force Chief of Staff Rao - Kamal - Sulaiman (Rao Qamar Suleman) will be said that in the case are available, JF-17 does not exclude the use of the Chinese WS-13 engine possible.

The article mentioned, the official reported that the JF-17 Peibei a Chinese-made KLJ-7 radar, can provide dual-mode tracking is superior to the U.S. F-16 was originally developed for the widespread use of the APG-66 radar, the Nanjing Mou E Institute of Technology developed the KLJ-7 radar can lock the target 70 km away, enough to guide the Chinese SD-10 air to air missile. Mr Ma said, "Our customers have the right (on the avionics and other subsystems) to make a choice, but I hope they choose 100% of the equipment in China."

At last, stated, in Taipei, Wendell - Minnick and Usman in Islamabad - Ansari (Usman Ansari) has also contributed to this article.

EJ200 engine from Typhoon is avaiable at a cool $6.8 million each.

Lso the LCA bid to GE414 though which cost $8 million each

IMAGINE A JF17 with the Typhoon engine EJ200
French mica BVR and RC400 radar

will triple the cost of each fighter though

EJ2000? no thanks ws-13 is good for us...!
Mica BVR? maybe or maybe the SD-10
RC400? maybe but why not what for NRIET AESA

no doubt that the cost will rise but not as significantly if Chinese avionics are used + ToT

there is any project in the paf pipline to build fighter engine factory with the help of ukrain r china ?

^^ NOPE. Jet engines are not an easy job. Requires lot of R&D and $$$$. Ukrain supply Tank engines to us not Jet engines.

Russia, China sign military cooperation protocol

Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and the head of China's Central Military Commission, Guo Boxiong, on Tuesday signed an agreement on developing military cooperation between the two states.

"First of all, it concerns contracts to supply spare parts for air defense systems, aviation and navy equipment," the minister's spokeswoman said.

The document was signed during a meeting of the Russian-Chinese intergovernmental commission on military cooperation in Beijing.

The sides noted "good perspectives for bilateral cooperation in spheres related to combat and military transport aviation, naval equipment, air defense systems and post-sale maintenance of Russian-made equipment that the Chinese army has in service," the spokeswoman added.

I believe RD-93 was also considered.
