(Reuters) - Iran will take action if a U.S. aircraft carrier which left the area because of Iranian naval exercises returns to the Gulf, the state news agency quoted army chief Ataollah Salehi as saying on Tuesday.

"Iran will not repeat its warning ... the enemy's carrier has been moved to the Sea of Oman because of our drill. I recommend and emphasize to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf," Salehi told IRNA.

"I advise, recommend and warn them (the Americans) over the return of this carrier to the Persian Gulf because we are not in the habit of warning more than once," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Salehi as saying.

Salehi did not name the aircraft carrier or give details of the action Iran might take if it returned.

Iran completed 10 days of naval exercises in the Gulf on Monday, and said during the drills that if foreign powers imposed sanctions on its crude exports it could shut the Strait of Hormuz, through which 40 percent of the world's traded oil is shipped.

The U.S. Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain, said it would not allow shipping to be disrupted in the strait.

Iran said on Monday it had successfully test-fired two long-range missiles during its naval drill, flexing its military muscle in the face of mounting Western pressure over its controversial nuclear program.

Iran also said it had no intention of closing the Strait of Hormuz but had carried out "mock" exercises on shutting the strategic waterway.

Tehran denies Western accusations that it is secretly trying to build atomic bombs, saying it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to resolve the Islamic state's nuclear row with the West.

The European Union is considering following the United States in banning imports of Iranian crude oil. U.S. President Barack Obama signed new sanctions against Iran into law on Saturday, stepping up the pressure by adding sanctions on financial institutions that deal with Iran's central bank.

Iran first invited Americans near their water and now they are crying. They could conduct exercises of any type with any secret motives/plans but what was the purpose to reveal warnings and invite whole world to be paranoid over security of oil transportation rout?

luffy...have you not been paying attention? If usa wanted to attack to iran they would had done it by now, matter of fact they would had invaded Iran instead of Iraq and afghan.
since if if the us took over Iran, it would had made taking over Iraq much easier. remember how strong usa was in the region when the shah was a friend to the usa. usa simply lacks the balls to do anything.

As for you other comment, Its hard to say what is going to happen in the war, Iran has a very powerful asymmetrical warfare ability, the problem is usa nukes, so if we sink their nuke stuff, then we have alot of radiation in our backyard.

It is unlikely that the USA would attack Iran directly. But rather through another country. There's a reason why they signed a $30 billion military deal (brand new F-15s along with other goodies) with Saudi Arabia.

Technically, Iran is no match for the USN.

Even a Mach 2.0 cruise missile is not hard to shoot down if the opponent has the correct technology.

But as I said, it is unlikely that the Americans would attack Iran directly. Especially in today's difficult economic times. Superpowers typically do not do that unless it is a direct threat to their interests.

With modern cruise missiles such as Moskit or Klub, or with anti-ship ballistic missiles, any ship including aircraft carriers are just sitting ducks because these ships are large and easily target-able. Besides any kind of defenses they might have, is not going to be 100% effective as no kind of defense is and in addition with a volley of these missiles coming down any kind of defense is going to be saturated and fail. Besides the history of real combat tells us that anti-ship missiles are notoriously effective and almost all of them have hit their target with deadly accuracy even those small missiles fired by a gurrilla group such as Hizbullah. The instances of ships defenses having won the day in a real combat have never happened. Here is how it is going to end up:

That's the reason why you guys should have nukes. The moment Iran have operational nuclear warheads and enough delivery systems they will be at a whole new level. A hope iran go nuclear and maintain a doctrine of Ambiguity like israel there by restoring the balance of power in the region.

How popular is the nuclear option among ordinary iranians? Will they support their GOV to go nuclear like pakistanis?

Luffy, how do we knoe Iran does not have nukes? its not like they will come test it in the middle of the persian gulf, Iran gets so many earthquakes, a small earthquake could be an underground nuke test.
