Singhania sets hot air balloon altitude record

Industrialist and aviator Vijaypat Singhania on Saturday became the first man to sail at 69,852 feet above sea level on a hot air balloon, thereby breaking the world record set by Per Lindstrand, in June 1988, in Texas of 64,997 ft.

"The balloon attained 69,000 feet at 8.55 am, thereby breaking the existing world record," an elated Gautam Singhania, son of Vijaypat Singhania, told reporters in Mumbai.

Though the attempt was to attain 70,000 feet, the journey was terminated after touching 69,000 feet.

Our aim was to first touch the 67,000 feet mark to set the new world record. After that we had aimed to go for the 70K mark. After touching 69K he came down a bit and again tried to sail up.

However, the technical team here and the Aeronautical Society of India (ASI) officials monitoring his journey did not want to take any risk and insisted that he came down since the world record had already been set," Gautam said.

The balloon travelled at a consistent speed. It took off from Mahalaxmi Race Course at 6.40 am amidst thunderous applause from a crowd gathered to watch Singhania sail towards his goal.

Before lifting off Singhania said, "I'm very excited but very nervous and confident I'll make it."

A helicopter followed the balloon to monitor wind direction in preparation for the landing.

The balloon, called Envelope and designed by Don Cameron, is around 160 feet high (approximately equivalent to the height of a 22-storey high building). It is made of 67,250 square feet of specially made light nylon, allowing it to gain altitude without much difficulty. It was inflated by blowing air into it using portable fans. It is also designed to be rip-proof, and the capacity of the air inside is 80,000 kilograms (80 tonnes) .

There are 18 burners of different capacity and design. The capsule is equipped with three fuel tanks, two filled with kerosene and one with propane. The weight of the balloon (including gondola, the envelope, 18 burners and other apparatus) is around 1,820 kilograms. The capsule is also equipped with necessary safety devices, should Singhania be forced to abort his mission. It is also fitted with state-of-the-art instrumentation and control systems for navigation.

Today's record was one of several set by Singhania in the sphere of aviation.
He had undertaken the fastest solo flight in a Microlight Aircraft from England to India in August/September 1988, establishing a new world record. This feat has been recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Indian sets balloon flight record

Indian Vijaypat Singhania has claimed a new world record for the highest flight in a hot air balloon, after a voyage lasting several hours.
The 67-year-old textile tycoon soared past 21,000 metres (69,000 feet) but fell just short of his original target.

He travelled in a pressurised cabin attached to a balloon as high as a 22-storey building.

The previous record of 19,811 metres (64,997 feet) was set by Per Lindstrand in Plano, Texas, in June 1988.

Mr Singhania's son, Gautam, announced the news to the waiting media.

He said: "As you can see we are very happy. The team is also excited because they have worked very hard on this project for a very long time."

Colin Prescott, leader of Mr Singhania's British technical team, said the official height was 21,290.89 metres (69,852 feet), subject to certification.

High hopes

A band played and hundreds of people watched as Mr Singhania's 48-metre (160 ft) balloon took off from Mumbai (Bombay) at 0645 (0115 GMT), the BBC's Monica Chadha reported from the city.

Management student Parag Sharma arrived at the venue at 0515 because he was so excited about seeing a hot air balloon for the first time.

"I had never seen one before so I thought this was a good opportunity. It is awesome, the balloon was gigantic," he said.
