Cuba, China, Russia elected to UN Human Rights Council
Secretary of State Pompeo said the move validates the decision by the U.S. to leave the body.
By Adam Shaw | Fox News

Cuba, China and Russia on Tuesday were elected to the U.N. Human Rights Council -- a move that the U.S. branded a “mockery” of the body's intended purpose and as proof that Washington was right to leave the council in 2018.

The three countries, all with a history of authoritarianism and human rights abuses, were elected by the U.N. General Assembly, along with countries including Bolivia, France, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, Senegal, Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia was on the ballot but failed to drum up enough support to win a seat.

The U.S. left the Geneva-based council in June 2018, with then-U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley describing it as "a protector of human rights abusers, and a cesspool of political bias."

On Tuesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the elections “only further validate the U.S. decision to withdraw and use other venues and opportunities to protect and promote universal human rights.”

U.N. Ambassador Kelly Craft said it “validates [Trump’s] decision to leave that deeply corrupted body.”

“With China, Russia, Cuba & Venezuela as members, the Council makes a mockery of its intended purpose and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” she said.

Last year, the U.N. General Assembly elected Libya, Sudan and Venezuela to the Council. Craft called the election of Venezuela, a country dogged by poverty and human rights abuses, an “embarrassment.”

No the mockery is when US the biggest violator of human rights in entire world brands itself as its champion. World has lost count regarding number of people that were killed raped maimed in Iraq Afghanistan Libya Syria due to Military adventures of yankees. When was the last time Americans uttered an apology to people they killed mercilessly and called them collateral damage. Entire generations of culture and people were lost due to American thirst for power.

The US is far from perfect, but that statement simply isn't true. None of those points you made actually relate directly to Human rights as defined by the universal declaration of human rights. You should perhaps read it sometime before commenting on the subject.

Bombing and killing civilians around the world is not a violation of human rights?

That is the problem with you people trying to vidicate deaths hundreds and thousands of people by technical tit bits. Outdated definitions will not vindicate US from CAOS and misery it caused around the globe directly or indirectly. So many times US knocked down UN inquiries into human rights violations by US troops in other countries. China might not have perfect Human rights record in their own country but at least they dont fcuk around in other people back yard and then leave with their $hit all over the place. Pakistan alone lost 80000 people directly or indirectly bcz of war US initiated in Afghanistan. You are right this is not just any simple Human rights violation but a massacer or genocide of a people belonging to a particular religion. Come back to me with this dumb logic of yours when you loose 80000 of your own country men then you can work around the technical tit bits.

No its "COLLETRAL DAMAGE" :suicide:

These American war crime apologists sometimes come up with dumbest excuses.

That's a straw man argument, you are completely ignorant of what human rights actually are. Like i suggested, go and educate yourself by first of all reading the universal declaration of human rights, and perhaps some follow on commentary. Especially if you are going to comment on the subject.

What human rights are should not by decided only by western definition, and bombing and killing civilians around the world are violation of human rights by any standard.

and the UNSC needs to be dissolved and restructured to reflect the realities more.

Agreed. The UNSC has simply become a rubber stamp of three of its permanent members who are also NATO members ( USA, France, Britain ) who carry out their imperialist agenda irrespective of the wishes and explanations of the other two permanent UNSC members ( Russia, China - especially Russia ).

Please read this thread OP about how good was Libya before the 2011 NATO + GCC + non-state actor invasion and how now it is in chaos. This is same as how Iraq and Syria have become.

Human Rights in the context of Freedom of Expression and Legal rights accorded to citizens in a country (internal).

You are conflating Foreign Policy decisions with the notion of Human Rights in UNSC context.

Those wars - how they started is something to ponder over as well. Let us not blanket judge a nation on fashionable grounds.

All FIVE of them tend to get away with much on UNSC. Let us not pretend otherwise.

The current UNSC model is outdated and needs a revisit in the light of modern realities. Abolishing VETO power would be a good start.

Pelase stop conflating worldwide American massmurders, worldwide American terrorism, worldwide American racial oppression and worldwide American caused poverty and lifeloss, with infringments on human rights and attacks on international security!!! Thats politics!

Only baseless political propaganda and slander about countries some small imperialist clique wants to suppress are human rights violations!

I don't find Russia launching imperialist wars. And though I don't think of China as communist enough I will grant that it limits its influence-building within collaborating and not through regime change.

Why just abolish veto power, why not abolish the UNSC itself ? The General Assembly is good enough to discuss affairs of countries.
