The 1,150-megawatt reactor, No. 5 unit of the Fuqing Nuclear Power Plan, which was connected to the national grid on Friday (11/27), can generate 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year and cut carbon emissions by 8.16 million tons. Nuclear plants supplied less than FIVE PERCENT of China's annual electricity needs in 2019, according to the National Energy Administration, but this share is expected to grow as China attempts to become carbon neutral by 2060. The landmark achievement signals a great improvement in the competitiveness of China’s nuclear power industry, which is of great significance for the country’s energy restructuring plan and pursuit of low-carbon development.

Reducing its dependence on imported technologies in critical high-tech sectors such as nuclear power generation is a key goal in Beijing's "MADE IN CHINA 2025" plan. Billions of dollars in state subsidies have been given to Chinese companies to speed up the process of technological developments. Beijing has INVESTED BILLIONS of dollars to develop its nuclear energy sector in recent years as it attempts to reduce dependency on coal usage. Thirteen nuclear plants are under construction, more than in any other country.

Roughly 50 nuclear reactors with a combined generation capacity of 50,000 megawatts are currently operating in China, local media reported. While seven units of the Hualong One are being built, another four have been approved for construction. China is the world's third highest in operating the nuclear power plant after the United States and France.

China is now on track to surpass the US as the world’s top producer of nuclear energy as early as 2030. According to the World Nuclear Association, an industry group, China’s total nuclear power generation capacity, including reactors under construction and in planning, came to 108,700 megawatts as of April 2020, more than America’s 105,120 MW. But, China comes in third in terms of capacity in operation currently, at 45,000 MW, after the US at about 98,000 MW and France at 62,000 MW.

The Hualong One, deployed at a plant in Fuqing, east China's Fujian province, will be put into commercial use by the end of 2020 after undergoing a series of tests and trial runs, including full-power continuous operation. China's first nuclear power project to use China's own Hualong One third-generation nuclear technology, which is being used in Pakistan at its K2 and K3 projects in the Karachi nuclear power plant, successfully generated power, and was connected to the grid early Friday morning,
a milestone in China's transformation from a major nuclear power to a strong nuclear power. The second Hualong One at Fuqing, Unit 6, is likely to be completed by 2021. China currently has six overseas Hualong One projects under construction. Part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, one reactor is nearing completion in Pakistan, and the design is also pending export approval from British and Argentinian authorities.

Chinese energy experts said the successful operation of the Hualong One nuclear reactor, which is expected to outperform other completed third-generation nuclear reactors in terms of cost, is of great significance as the success adds confidence to the vital technological export.

CNNC said the successful connected-grid power generation provides a sound foundation for the commercialization of such reactors, and sets up the best-in-class result in terms of constructing the first reactor for the third-generation nuclear reactor globally.

The successful power generation of the Fuqing-5 reactor marks the addition of a THIRD nuclear power plant in the world utilizing so-called THIRD-GENERATION nuclear technology, with the first two - the Sanmen nuclear plant in East China's Zhejiang Province using the US' AP1000 technology and the Taishan nuclear plant in South China's Guangdong Province installed with France's evolutionary power reactors (EPR) technology, also in China.

The first two nuclear power generators ran into problems as costs surged after the projects faced delays.

Experts said that Hualong One could succeed in the international market and serve as a new solution to the world's resource shortage, and plays a role in China's efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Wang Dezhong, a professor specializing in nuclear-related technology at the School of Mechanical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, said Friday's event is a MILESTONE for homegrown technology, VALIDATING its reliability.

"As Chinese leaders have pointed out, the HUALONG ONE is China's national business card in the global market, and, having a successful operation for the Fuqing-5 reactor, is very positive for overseas sales of the technology," said Wang Dezhong on Friday.

Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University, said because Hualong One is an exclusively homegrown technology, that means China CAN SELL this technology in global markets, unlike the other [licensed] technologies that can only be used in the construction of nuclear plants in China.

There will also be a COST ADVANTAGE for the Hualong One, with EXCLUSIVE intellectual property rights.

CNNC said for the Hualong One, the company and its partners owned over 700 patents, more than 120 software copyrights, one set of international nuclear standards and 411 domestically produced core equipment covering the life cycle of a nuclear power plant. China’s nuclear power industry now has roughly 5,000 companies including 58 state-owned enterprises in the supply chain.

The reactor, with all of its core components produced domestically, has a DESIGNED LIFE of 60 YEARS and and 177 reactor cores, which will be replaced every 18 months, and meets the strictest safety standards in the world (with its two layers of containment), according to the CNNC.

Experts said that as those [third-generation nuclear technologies] are the FIRST PROJECTS GLOBALLY [US' Westinghouse AP1000; France Areva EPR; China's Hualong One (HPR 1000)], companies usually spend more time than planned as they turn blueprints into projects. But when a delay happens, financial costs for the projects will soar, easily double the original budgets.

"It is highly likely that the Fuqing-5, utilizing China's proprietary technology, could feature lower costs in power generation than the two other plants," said Lin Boqiang on Friday.

Argentina and Saudi Arabia have shown interest in China's Hualong One nuclear reactors.

CNNC has SIX reactors utilizing Hualong One technology under construction in China and abroad.

CHENGDU, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The HL-2M Tokamak, China's new-generation "artificial sun," went into operation on Friday and has achieved its first plasma discharge, according to the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

Designed to replicate the natural reactions that occur in the sun using hydrogen and deuterium gases as fuels, the apparatus in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, will provide clean energy through controlled nuclear fusion, said the CNNC.

The self-developed device is the country's largest in scale and highest in parameters, with a more advanced structure and control mode than its predecessor, the HL-2A Tokamak.

It is able to generate plasma hotter than 150 million degrees Celsius and is expected to greatly enhance the research and development of key technologies in plasma physics research in China.

"The energy confinement time of international tokamak devices is less than one second. The shot discharge duration of the HL-2M is around 10 seconds, with an energy confinement time of a few hundred milliseconds," said Yang Qingwei, chief engineer of the HL-2M at the Southwestern Institute of Physics under the CNNC.

The artificial sun will provide key technical support for China's participation in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project and frontier research fields including flow instability and magnetic phenomena of ultra-high temperature plasma, according to Yang.
