    What a text says isn't necessarily the same as what it means. Here's a fun example: "The sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick." What it says is clear enough, what the person writing it means to do is to twist your tongue!

    On a more prosaic level, many passages refer to other passages, or (in the case of poetry or the Koran) may be written in a particular way to ease memorization or recitation and but need interpretation to divine their meaning.

    Furthermore, you usually need to keep in mind the context of communication to avoid misinterpretation. Suppose I write, "Kill the moths!" Am I talking about all moths everywhere, for all time, or do I just mean the here and now? Without context you cannot tell.
