MIKES Ranks 5th in Turkey in the R&D Centres Performance Index Study
In carrying out an analysis of the present situation of R&D Centres, in deepening R&D work and in order to determine the contribution of these centres to the national economy, the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology undertook a recent study. Within the coverage of this study, in order to evaluate the activities of these centres, monitoring their performance by years and creating a road map based on the outcome, first, a R&D Centre Performance Index Analysis criteria were prepared and after collecting the relevant data, work on all R&D Centres’ Performance Index was completed.
From among the 81 R&D Centres included in this evaluation, 69 Centres were ranked and MIKES was 5th in the overall ranking, 3rd in its sector, 1st in the commercialisation ranking and the 4th firm in the R&D personnel employment ranking.
Active mainly in the electronic warfare systems, the MIKES R&D Centre operates on a wide range in the defence electronics sector. MIKES, within TUBIAK’s Technology and Innovation Funding Programmes Directorate (TEYDEB) 1501 legislation, has allocated resources to the Remote/Near Sound Detection System Development (SESAL) Project (3110604) and the Closed- Loop Radar Test Simulator (RTSim) Project (3120651) that is supported by TUBITAK.
The projects commenced to develop various receiver devices required in the communication bands of electronic warfare systems, the HF Direction Finding and Monitoring Receiver Design and Development (3120048) Project and the Monitor Receiver for Communication Publications Design and Development Project (3110727) are also being supported by TEYDEB. The successfully completed projects, such as the V/UHF Band Monitor Receiver device, have reached the serial production stage to be domestically used in various systems. MIKES at the present time has 148 research personnel on duty of which 6 have a doctorate and 12 are pursuing a doctorate.

TURKEY TRAINS WHITE HAT HACKERS FOR CYBERSECURITY
The Turkishgovernment has started a training program for "white hat hackers" or experts specialized on detecting flaws in cybersecurity systems. The training program will end in June and security specialists will receive certificates.
The Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Fikri Işık said computerization in all public and private institutions from hospitals to universities, to banks and the government agencies also left those institutions to the risk of hacking. "It is vital for those institutions to take measures on accessibility, integrity and secrecy of data such as regular security tests against hacking attempts, infiltrations etc," he said. Işık said white-hat hackers were necessary for implementation of these measures.
Işık noted those who complete the training program will have employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors. Training program is conducted by Turkish Standards Institution (TSE) tasked by the Ministry of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications which drafted a National Cyber Security Action Plan to boost Turkey's cybersecurity.
It is the first time that the state has trained hackers. Training started on May 5 for the hackers who will sit exams on June 23 and 27 before receiving certificate of "White Hat Hacker - Penetration Testing Expert." The next training program will start in September.
White hat hackers have been used by large corporations including Microsoft, Apple and Facebook as well as government and military institutes across the world such as the United States' National Security Agency (NSA), NATO and Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps.
Hackers' training came into the spotlight following an investigation initiated at the request of the president of the Telecommunications Directorate (TİB), Cemalettin Çelik, which revealed the extent of the threat posed to national security and information systems by the Gülen Movement. The Movement, headed by U.S-based cleric Fethullah Gülen is accused of running a "parallel state" in Turkey with followers infiltrating into key posts in the government agencies in an effort to undermine the government. Prosecutors and police officers linked to the Movement were accused of carrying out illegal wiretappings.
The investigation at TİB, a top telecommunications authority responsible for carrying out wiretapping authorized by intelligence agencies, found all digital records prior to 2012 were erased and stolen, some of which contained crucial information about wiretappings. Additionally, a significant part of TİB's archives were reported stolen, allegedly by Gülenists accused of conducting wiretappings for blackmail purposes.

Officials have decided to shut down a groundbreaking quantum lab at the Istanbul University after it broke down when a fire erupted in the facility, prompting acrimony over mismanagement of the valuable research asset.

Erdogan: Turkey set for advances in science, technology
ANKARA – Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that Turkey is experiencing a "reinvigoration" in science and technology.
Addressing the 27th Science and Technology Convention in Ankara on Wednesday, Erdogan said: “A roadmap will be set for the development of medical biotechnology, which is key to shape-up the future.”
“Turkey went through pain, suffering and many losses within the last two hundred years, while the proclamation of the Republic in 1923 was a harbinger to the end of those losses. Now we are living the excitement of reinvigorartion of economy, science, commerce, diplomacy and art. God willing, we will have many more gains and successes, and live joys in future.”
The Republic of Turkey was proclaimed on 29 October 1923.
Hailing the country's economic success, Erdogan added: “Turkey has become a center of attraction not only for local investors but foreign investors also.”
He singled out renewable energy as a particularly innovative field. Energy experts say Turkey is aiming to reduce its dependency on foreign energy and fossil fuels because of rising energy demand, which is increasing at a rate second only to China, and wants to increase use of renewable energy by 30 per cent by 2023.
In 2013, the country generated 45 per cent of its electricity from natural gas, 25 per cent from coal, 25 per cent from hydro-power and three per cent from wind. Wind energy is currently at 3,000 megawatt production capacity that is expected to reach 4,000MW levels by the end of the year.

Most important part of a turbine is it's blades. If you can produce the blades, rest is a piece of cake.

Mate, i'm not so knowledgeable in this issue. I tried to research this subject once and seen there are tons of production methods for Turbine blades. The one of the most important thing in the production is metallurgy. So we need to produce stainless steel at some point. Also Aircraft compressor blades have much more angular velocity than a steam turbines blades, meaning different metallurgy. Also those blades are made of nickel alloys and titaniums.
None the less this is an important development but don't see this development as a giant leap. We are still at the begining.
