Heavily-armed militants stormed a police station in Wana town of South Waziristan district early on Tuesday leaving one police official injured in the attack.

One terrorist was also killed during an exchange of fire between the militants, reportedly belonging to the banned TTP, and police officials. The body was transported to the Frontier Corps (FC) camp where it remains under the custody of security forces.

Being outgunned and outnumbered, reportedly all police personnel surrendered. The militants then proceeded to loot all weapons and ammunition at the station and fled taking police vehicles.

According to police, the attackers numbered between 50 to 60 and were armed with rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, and other small arms.

The militants first attacked the police station with RPGs, hand grenades, and other light weapons. Once the gate was breached, they entered the premises forcing the police officials to surrender.

Security forces have reportedly begun preparations for a search operation and have initiated an investigation into the incident. Fear has spread among the locals after the attack.

It may be noted that in November the TTP had said that they had called off a ceasefire agreed with the federal government in June and ordered its militants to stage terrorist attacks across the country, a statement from the banned terror outfit said.

The TTP, a separate entity from the Taliban in Afghanistan but sharing a similar hardline ideology, have been responsible for hundreds of attacks and thousands of deaths since emerging in 2007.

Four police officials injured in militant attack on Dera Ismail Khan check post

The Newspaper's Correspondent
December 31, 2022

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Four policemen were injured when a group of terrorists attacked a checkpost with rockets and grenades in Kulachi tehsil here on Friday, an official said.

District police spokesman Yaqoob Shah told Dawn that an unknown number of militants stormed the Takwarra checkpost early in the morning. He said the police personnel retaliated the attack, and after an intense exchange of fire, the militants escaped the scene.

The spokesman said that four policemen sustained injuries during the exchange of fire.

“About 17 to 18 rocket-propelled grenades and about 25 to 27 hand grenades were used by militants in the attack,” the police spokesman said, adding the police had also launched a search operation in the area.

Soon after the incident, district police officer Mohammad Shoaib Khan and DSP Saddar circle Hafiz Mohammad Adnan arrived at the site and supervised the search operation.

On Thursday, a search and strike operation was conducted in the same Takwarra area, in which six suspects were held along with an SMG rifle, a pistol and 20 cartridges.

On December 25, militants had attacked a mobile van of the Kulachi police station in the same Takwarra area, and also attempted to blow up an armoured personnel carrier of the police with an improvised explosive device.

Separately, two labourers were killed in a firing incident in Qayyum Nawaz Colony of the city, an official said on Friday.

A Cantonment police official said that two labourers, namely Amanullah and Mohammad Arshad, residents of Dhotar area of Paharpur, were fatally attacked by unknown persons when they were digging a plot to build a house.

The police and Rescue 1122 team shifted the bodies to the District Headquarters Teaching Hospital, DI Khan.

The police official said the attackers had a land dispute with the owner of the plot.

A soldier of Pakistan Army embraced martyrdom while four terrorists were killed during an intelligence-based operation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, the military said on Saturday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement said that security forces conducted the IBO in general area Jani Khel of Bannu during which intense fire exchange took place between the troops and terrorists.

“Own troops effectively engaged the terrorists’ location. Resultantly, 4 terrorists got killed. Weapon and ammunition was also recovered from the killed terrorists,” the statement added.
The slain terrorists remained actively involved in terrorist activities against security forces and killing of innocent citizens, according to the military’s media wing.

“However, during intense exchange of fire, Sepoy Muhammad Wasim (age 25 years, resident of Khairpur) having fought gallantly, embraced shahadat.”
The ISPR said sanitisation of the area is being carried out to eliminate any other terrorists found in the area.

The latest incident came amid a spike in terrorist attacks across the country claimed mostly by the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which unilaterally scrapped a ceasefire in November effectively ending a start-stop negotiation process brokered by the Afghan Taliban.

The TTP, which was comprehensively defeated in a decisive kinetic operation by the military, has found safe havens across the border in Afghanistan from where the group has been directing its terrorist operations in Pakistan.

Islamabad has called these TTP sanctuaries “red-line” and pressed Kabul’s new rulers to take action against them. Experts believe Pakistan’s patience is running thin due to Kabul’s reluctance to crack down on the TTP bases as Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said during his recent US visit that “all options are on the table” to deal with a resurgent TTP.

Unofficial data show a 51% increase in terrorist violence between August 15, 2021, and August 14, 2022 – almost a year since the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul. At least 433 people were killed and 719 injured in 250 attacks across Pakistan during this period.

A “key terrorist” was killed and a police constable martyred in the early hours of Sunday when gunmen attacked a police checkpost in the Shahbaz Khel area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat District, a local police official said.

“The terrorists attacked the police [checkpost] with heavy and automatic weapons and tried to break in,” Lakki Marwat police spokesperson Shahid Hameed told Dawn.com, adding that RPG-7s, grenades and other “advanced weapons” were used.

“The attack was thwarted by the timely action of the police,” the spokesperson said.

Hameed identified the martyred policeman as of Constable Tehsinullah of the Rapid Response Force.

“A key terrorist was killed during the police’s retaliatory action,” the spokesperson said, identifying him as Owais Abdulkhel. Weapons were recovered from his possession.

The suspect was wanted by the CTD (Counter Terrorism Department) Bannu for being allegedly involved in attacks on police and security forces, Hameed said.

A police search operation is underway in the area.

The martyred police constable’s funeral prayers were offered at the office of the Lakki Marwat district police officer on Sunday morning, where they were attended by police and army officials.

The attack comes in the wake of a recent uptick in terrorist attacks across the country after the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its months-long ceasefire with the government.

Recent weeks have seen a resurgence of militancy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the southern belt and merged districts, with increasing intensity of attacks on law enforcement personnel.

Most recently, a policeman was martyred and at least six people — including four police officers and two civilians — were injured in a suicide blast in Islamabad’s I-10/4 sector last week. The attack was claimed by the TTP.

In Nov 16, 2022, six police personnel were reported to have been killed in what was described as a terror attack in Lakki Marwat after a police mobile patrol came under gunfire.
