Sept 13 (Reuters) - Clashes erupted between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, Russian news agencies reported early on Tuesday, in a resumption of decades-old hostilities linked to the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Azerbaijan, which re-established full control over the territory in a six-week conflict in 2020, acknowledged casualties among its forces. Armenia made no mention of losses, but said clashes persisted overnight.

The Yerevan government said it would invoke a cooperation agreement with Russia and appeal to a Russia-led security bloc, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, as well as the United Nations Security Council, Interfax reported.

Each side blamed the other for the outbreak in fighting.

"Several positions, shelters and reinforced points of the Azerbaijan armed forces ... came under intense shelling from weapons of various calibres, including mortars, by units of the Armenian army," the agencies quoted a statement by Azerbaijan's Defence Ministry as saying.

"As a result, there are losses in personnel and damage to military infrastructure."

Azerbaijani statements said Armenian forces had been engaged in intelligence activity on its border, moved weapons into the area and on Monday night had conducted mining operations.

It said its actions were "strictly local in nature aimed at military targets."

Armenia's Defence Ministry said: "Intensive shooting is continuing - started as a result of a large-scale provocation by the Azerbaijani side. Armenia's armed forces have launched a proportionate response."

Conflict first broke out in the late 1980s when both sides were under Soviet rule and Armenian forces captured swathes of territory near Nagorno-Karabkah - long recognised internationally as Azerbaijan's territory, but with a large Armenian population.

Azerbaijan regained those territories in the 2020 fighting, which ended with a Russian-brokered truce and thousands of residents returning to homes from which they had fled.

The leaders of both countries have since met several times to hammer out a treaty intended to establish a lasting peace.

“At 00:05 a.m. (2005 GMT) on Tuesday, Azerbaijan launched intensive shelling, with artillery and large-calibre firearms, against military positions in the direction of the cities of Goris, Sotk, and Jermuk,” defense ministry said.

Defense ministry said in a statement Azerbaijan had also used drones.

But Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry accused Enemy Formation of “Large-Scale Subversive Acts” near the Districts of Dashkesan, Kelbajar and Lachin on the border, adding that Enemy Formation - Army Positions “came under fire, including from trench mortars.”

Good.

As Russia is getting balkanized, this is the best time to finish off the Armenians, Greek Cypriots, Greeks, Serbs and Croats.

Turkiye and Pakistan should partner in this endeavor.

But France, Europe and USA also back Armenia and Greece. It will not end well for Azerbaijan, the best outcome is gain all lost territory and sign peace agreement.

Russia has suffered and will loose alot of their power and influence but it will still be here.

French are jokers. US and NATO cannot go against Turkiye.

Turkiye Controls Black sea and Oil & gas transit from Central Asia.

But they can go against Russia? A state with nuclear weapons and powerful military force.

Israel and US support Azerbayjan silently and actively (by delivering arms). They want to push NATO terrorism into Caucasus and cut Iran-Caucasus (trade) route. Ofcourse Iran has already warned against this zionist strategy and Iran wants a balanced and long term peace between Armenia and Azerbayjan.
But some figures are thinking now that while Russia is busy in Ukraine, lets increase tensions.

Russians are still employing 20th century tactics.

Turkiye is decades ahead of the Russians except for the nukes.

Turkey is powerful but not so powerful that they can defend against Nato/Usa. Azerbaijan should take back its territory and then sign peace deal with Armenia. France looks weak on paper because they have nato/usa so don't need to invest heavily in to military.

France was against Turkish involvement in Azerbaijan/Armenian war, they defended Armenia etc but because of Turkey they stayed back. If Armenian homeland is attacked then it would be a different scenario.

Turkiye is part of NATO. So Article 5 cannot be invoked against Turkiye.

Come on brother. Who cares about Articles. Iraq war was illegal and they went to war without UN approval. Who cares about laws?

Turkiye already has Russia and China as a backup to NATO.

If US & EU try to do any hanky panky, they can say good bye to their access to Blacksea, Caucuses and Central Asia.

Armenia-Azerbaijan: Dozens dead in overnight clashes

Dozens of soldiers have been killed in fighting between neighbouring countries Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said 49 of its soldiers died in overnight clashes.
The two countries have fought two wars and seen regular smaller clashes over the course of three decades.

Russia claimed it had brokered a ceasefire for the latest outbreak - but Armenia said only that the fighting had calmed, rather then ended completely.

At the core of the dispute is the region of Nagorno-Karabakh. It is, according to internationally-recognised borders, firmly a part of Azerbaijan - but is populated by ethnic Armenians.

The cultural divide extends beyond politics into religion, too: Armenia is a majority-Christian country, while Azerbaijan is mostly Muslim.

The dispute has led to full-scale war in the 1980s and 1990s, a six-week war in 2020, and continuing clashes for decades.

Both countries blame the other for the latest outbreak of violence.

Armenia claimed that several towns along the border had been shelled by its neighbour, and that it had responded to the provocation. Azerbaijan said its military positions came under attack first.

Violence continued on Monday night before Moscow said it had negotiated a rapid ceasefire to take effect early Tuesday morning.

Armenia's Nikol Pashinyan, however, said "the intensity of hostilities has decreased but attacks on one or two fronts from Azerbaijan continue."

Azerbaijan is understood to have also suffered casualties, but has not publicly issued a statement on the number of injured or dead.

The fighting has been condemned internationally, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken saying, "there can be no military solution to the conflict".

Russia, which is historically close to Armenia, said the ongoing dispute "should be resolved exclusively through political and diplomatic means".

It urged both sides to "exercise restraint".

Turkey has ties with Azerbaijan, and seemingly backed its version of events. Turkey's foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, said "Armenia should cease its provocations and focus on peace negotiations".

Monday night's fighting is believed to be the worst since the 2020 conflict, in which thousands were killed. That war ended in a deal brokered by Russia, which saw Armenia withdraw its troops from occupied areas around Nagorno-Karabakh.

A Russian peacekeeping force of nearly 2,000 mean was deployed to the area as part of the negotiations, where it remains today.

Its a great time to hit Armenia. Russia is down and west os preoccupied with Ukraine. Only thing saving Armenia is Russia and they are not in a great position to help Armenia. Lets see how turkey and Azerbaijan exploits this situation.

Even when Russia was not engaged in the Ukraine war, Russia could not save Armenia.

Turkish Arms and Tech are superior to that of the Russians.

TB2 simply destroyed the Armenian forces.

It will be a cake walk this time.
