Yep legendary stuff. I can't get enough of watching documentaries about the battle fought.
You have to give to the US they mastered tactical warfare on the open seas.

I agree Waz! Unbelievable firepower demonstration by American troops, at the zenith of their military might during Second World War... the amount of “sustained” bombardment on islands tells you the “massive” logistical support the troops enjoyed ... that is the American industrial military might till to date.

So my best friend's father-in-law fought on Okinawa (hmm or maybe it was Iwo Jima).
It wasn't easy getting info out of him. The only thing he would say was that in every foxhole there were two very young Asian girls (maybe not just Okinawans) for every Japanese soldier. Lots of girls screaming with limbs missing and US soldiers would be shaking their heads saying "WTF!!!" at how horrifically absurd it was.

Must be true... the civilian losses are way too high ... the girls must have been slaved to keep the morale high of Japanese troops ... but on front line, Japanese were the most savage army ahead of Russians in persecuting and linking civilians in WW2...

Well the US soldiers didn't feel much sympathy and weren't holding back machine gunning the lot of them.

I am sure most of the Japanese Troops died during artillery bombardment, American troops went in for clearing operations... what does Japanese history says ?

I think it says 220 girls from an Okinawan high school were asked to be nurses and all of them died on the front lines defending the homeland.

The US had the advantage of heavy tanks, semi automatic rifles, radars, flamethrowers. Japan lacked these.

I find the battle of Iwo Jima more interesting. The Japanese general Tadamichi Kuribayashi was brilliant tactician. Granted it was a lost cause.
