Working women: India vs. China

I wrote in July about India’s low - and falling - female labour force participation rates. The latest numbers from the Labour Bureau had pegged female LFPR at 25 per cent, meaning only one out of every four women of working age in India was either employed or looking for work. Economists and social scientists didn’t know for sure what was driving this crisis in female unemployment.

I have an interesting update on this debate via a poll conducted by Gallup of 20,000 adults in India, and 17,000 adults in China between 2009 and 2012. They confirm the finding that only 25 per cent of Indian women are in the workforce, while for China they find that this proportion is a huge 70 per cent. At the highest level of education, the workforce participation rates are the same for Chinese men and women while in India, men are twice as likely as women to be in the labour force at the highest levels of education.

Despite being far larger as a group, Chinese women in the workforce are more likely to find work, and find steady work, then Indian women who join the workforce, the Gallup poll findings say.

One could speculate that smaller family sizes and better state support help more Chinese women take up jobs than Indian women. Culture also seems to play an important role in women working outside the house – all of south Asia has low female workforce rates, though even Pakistan does better than India.

So what can be done? The World Bank in its World Development Report 2013 on jobs [see page 30] suggests three ways that public policy can help: improve services that free up women’s time from household work (like better crèches or drinking water); help women gain access to productive assets like education; and remove discriminatory practices from the market.

Its more a cultural thing, anyways do you work?

.
In total workforce of woman in India. only few work in an organised sector in India while several fold works in unorganised sector.
Also culturally many woman dislike working and enjoy giving support to family and children. But times are definitely changing in cities, living costs are huge and you will find majority of couples having jobs to support the family.

i believe that lot Indians here consider you to be a women, in the case, if you are really interested in increasing the share of women in workforce, i rather suggest you to find a job and get a life, instead of nitpicking topics which are out of scope on a defense forum.

women are respected in our society and they are gaining prominence in the political, work and business arenas

India ranked at 141 among 165 countries analyzed by Newsweek magazine in the treatment of women, which was published in September.

the indian women are advised to leave workplace before 8 pm or something like that so as to avoid sexual assualts.

learn to ignore the ignorant's

let them live in their delusions, the more deluded they are ,the better for us.

it's only the enlightened minds which can cause damage to the rulers, not the fools. that's why we see a lot of distraction in today's media, they want to keep us as distracted as possible.

while the goods news is,according to EFA Global Monitoring Report(Education For All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report)
which comes under the UNESCO

two-thirds of children out of school in Pakistan are girls – a rate that is worse in only 16 other countries in the world. “The percentage of poorest girls out of school has fallen from 78 per cent to 62 per cent, a much narrower drop than in India (from 66 per cent to 30 per cent), Nepal (from 52 per cent to 22 per cent), and Bangladesh (from 91 per cent to 44 per cent),” the report stated.

“The poorest girls in Pakistan are twice as likely to be out of school as the poorest girls in India, almost three times as likely as the poorest girls in Nepal and around six times as likely as the poorest girls in Bangladesh,”

while we calculate the percentage wise, the drop to 30 percent doesn't seem to be big,but when we look at the actual number of girls who managed to get an education in India, the figures will be positive.

30 percent of Pakistan's population is not the same as 30 percent of India's population, the difference will be in millions, if we go by numbers, i believe, the number of poor girls who were educated in India will be at least be equal to all the girls who managed to get education in all other south Asian countries combined,if not more.

its more of a culture issue generally people don't have much problem in allowing women to work at corporate offices but are hesitant in allowing women to work as labourers...

Thats the reason u see the difference in the two neighbours....:agree:

When its comes to upliftment of women China is ahead of India, but i'd consider Sri Lanka as role model for India.

Worry about women in your country. No need to chest thump here or got to any funny thread in this forum and laugh out there.

Regarding Women empowerment India has made some very good progress since independence. In my state women always dominate men in academics :P
