WikiLeaks: Indo-Pak nuke war may kill 12 million people

New Delhi: In a startling disclosure, WikiLeaks cited a classified Pentagon study as saying that long-running hostilities between nuclear-armed neighbours - India and Pakistan - can eventually lead to a nuclear war in Asia.

According to the files released by the whistleblower website, the US warned at a non-proliferation meeting in 2008 that an atomic conflict between India and Pakistan could result in 12 million deaths.

As per the cables, leaked to the Daily Telegraph, the US further warned: ‘A nuclear and missile arms race (in South Asia) has the direct potential to lead to nuclear war in the world's most densely populated area and a region of increasing global economic significance”.

The US also feels that an atomic arms race in the Middle East and Asia has the ‘direct potential to lead to nuclear war’.

Syria, Iran and North Korea are making all efforts to produce long-range missiles which could be fired outside the region, as per the document.

The cables also said that the then US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sent a memo to Indian government to stop the sale of materials used to make chemical weapons to Syria.

In December 2008, a Syria-linked company tried to acquire pumps, glass-lined reactors and heat exchangers from two Indian private firms.

But the US memo led to the obstruction of the sale.

Reports say that Syria is using VX and Sarin to produce chemical weapons.

The US also intervened to block the sale of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons materials to North Korea.

A Chinese company had reportedly agreed to sell a deadly chemical to North Korea.

dont know a nuke war will kill 12 million or 120 million...

but i know for sure our useless government will not fire the first missile..(damn no-first use policy)..

i think we should make changes to this policy...in case we have definite inteliigence that we are going to face nuke attack..we should pre-empt a nuke strike...

if america is truly concerned over nuk weapons why don't they agree to destroy their own nuk's?

our current policy is mature and responsible. no need to change it

no that is a wrong policy to have..no matter how efficient the intelligence is there is always a chance of wrong info..so we can't play with nuk's just on on the basis of intelligence.

Do they also say in which places the attacks will happen ??

If Mumbai is on the list, damn I am booking my return flights to my native deep South.

damn noobs.
on topic: our current policy is mature and responsible. no need to change it

what i metioned is definately on topic..Our policy is definately mature in terms foreign policy posturing...but isnt this true that in case of indo- pak war..and where we are overwhelming them with our conventional weapons..pakistan might use neclear weapons..and if we know that they r going to strike with nuclear weapons..should we still say'O prepare our nuclear weapons..but we wont fire until 10 million of our ppl die of nuclear bomb and its aftermath radiation.'

NFU is more of a international posturing tool than rather a policy cast in stone and will be followed to the last letter in case of war.

It is exactly because of that that no one today really cares about Indian nukes, even if they know that we are producing it a considerable pace and offer us the civilian deal and agree to the explicit separation of military facilities which will be outside all inspections.

These are all flexible policies which change according to the situation and nor inflexible.

OP Edited. Kindly accept my apologies (its been a long day my friend)

On topic: Pakistan has officially stated that it will use nukes only if it is close to dis-memberment, our op doctrines do not call for that. and in most scenarios we will not be the ones crossing the Intl Border (case in point Kargil)
Publicly changing our nuke policy will cause more harm than good. samjha karo paaji :D

apologies not neccesary..but accepted though:smitten:

yes..pakistan has stated that they will only use nukes incase they are close to dismemberment or their existance is threatened..

but do we know wt pakistan considers threat to their existance..?

pakistan considers every problem of theirs to be created by india...

incase of hostilites..it may consider anything to be threat to its existance...we dont need to cross international border for tat(though i think if necessary india will cross in case of war)..

india has stopped supply of water..nuke them..
india is formenting problem in balochistan...it is trying to dismember us..nuke them..
and my favorite..india is supporting TTP ,al-qaeda and wat- not in swat, fata, waziristan ....nuke them...:woot:

i agree to ur point though publicly changing the policy may harm us internationally..
so i think may be india should suggest pakistani authorities in private..and particularly the pakistani army....that NFU will be thrown out of window incase we find pakistan is thinking of using nukes...

hey, you like really worried man. . . Believe me Pakistan is in as much mood to start a nuclear attack as india is. That means in no hurry.

- - Above all according to my knowledge the only country in the world which says that it will not keep from using nuclear weapons is North Korea.

As far as other nuclear powers of the world (including Pakistan & India) is concerned, nuclear war is always the last option you have; never the first. . .

those are plain rhetoric, I'm happy to point out that increasingly issues such as baglihar and kishenganga have been taken to international court and solved fair and square. I definitely think, (rhetoric for internal consumption aside) both govts have realized war is not an option so diplomatic channels must be opened.
But then again I'm sometimes criticized of being overly optimistic....you can make your own decision :)

'Just' 12 million?????

The destruction would be muchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh greater..Jeez look at our population.
