Runa Laila is the first and only Bangladeshi artist who is / was popular globally (Indian subcontinent). Other than her nobody knows a single artist from Bangladesh. James? Not much. He just sang two Hindi songs. Thats it. I think we are suffering on global platform due to lack of representation of Bangladeshi celebrities in Indian subcontinent / across the world. Pakistan is more conservative than Bangladesh as an Islamic country yet they have some global stars from music and TV industry.

I think what we only know is how to do politics but not how to represent our country positively to the world with arts and music. Even our West Bengali Indians don't know anything about Bangladeshi artists. :hitwall:

The Sub-continent is hardly global...and most people know Runa Laila because she use to sing Urdu songs(Urdu/Hindi having more speakers than us).

Runa laila is runa laila because of Pakistani film industry from where she started her singing career not by singing bangla songs but urdu filmi songs :D

French and Japanese used to dance to Nusrat fateh ali Khan even though they didn't know what he was saying .

When it comes to Music you shouldn't really be comparing your self to Pakistan or even Indian. We are in a league of our own. Maybe you can compare Bangladesh Music industry with Buthan or Nepal.

There are plenty of great singers in India with bengali origin. Can someone make list of those singers beside Kumar sanu, shaan, sherya ghosal

is arjit singh bengali as well?

It's because of culture. Punjab's culture and Sufism is deeply fermented within music.

Runa Laila is half Sylheti. Never knew that before.

She now, does look like a Pk! Punjabi female, though!
(Those who understand) beta marka beti!

What's your culture? Sufism spread through out subcontinent!

Sufism is much more prominent within Pakistan; especially when it's being encouraged by the state and media. Although Sufism is spread throughout the continent; Pakistan is the heart of it - and the most dense. You'll see the opposite in Bangladesh when secularism is being forced upon the people.

Secondly, our culture is deeply seeded within Music - whether it be Baluch, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Pashtun, Sindhi; Music is important in all of those cultures.

Because they dont sing urdu anymore.
But the biggest question is why we stopped producing singers like Runa Leila
