In my office one of our Hindu colleagues distributed sweet dessert balls made by coconut on the occation of Durga Puja. It is a big festival in Bangladesh after Eid. The sweets are tasty but have very strange smell. There is something in that sweet which is not found in regular sweet coconut balls made by common Bangladeshi Muslim households. What is in it? One female colleague stopped eating it halfway when she gets the smell. She says something strange smell is coming from the sweet balls.

No joke. It is a serious question.

Because they dont wash hands due to water scarcity and poor sanitation, needless to mention non availability of toilets.

No idea.

May be they use 'Desi Ghee' for making those sweets? Desi ghee usually have strong smell.

Maybe camphor. As far as I know, Hindu ceremonies use camphor and maybe camphor was included in the sweet you were given.

Google gives contradictory info about camphor's effects :

Hmmm I haven't found this with my Hari Krishna friends, but found this with another Hindu sect. It must be an ingredient that some use and some don't.
