NEW DELHI: Just hours before the Agni missile was to be tested in 1989, its pioneer A P J Abdul Kalam received a hotline phone call from a top government official indicating tremendous pressure by the US and NATO to delay the launch.

The man on the other end was none other than T N Seshan, the then cabinet secretary to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. This incident finds mention in "Advantage India: From Challenge to Opportunity", one of the last books written by the late Kalam which will hit the stands soon.

According to Kalam, a hotline call at 3 AM, only a few hours prior to the launch, could not mean anything good. "Where are we on Agni?" Seshan asked.

"Then without waiting for me to answer, he said, 'We are under tremendous pressure by the US and NATO to delay any impending missile test. There are strong diplomatic channels at work.' Then almost immediately he followed again with the first question, 'Kalam! Where are we on Agni?'" the book, published by HarperCollins India, says.

It was a difficult question for Kalam to answer.

"My mind raced vast distances in the next few seconds. There were intelligence reports of US satellites fixing their gaze on us. I knew the US was putting increasing pressure on the Prime Minister and his office to delay the launch. Worse, there were reports that Chandipur might be struck with very bad weather in the next few days.

"Then there was my team. Hard working, determined young men and women whom we had handpicked for this assignment about one decade ago. They had seen everything. Technology denials, evictions from other nations, tight budgets, media pressure and the frustration of restarting curtailed projects that had been shut down due to lack of critical apparatus...," Kalam wrote in the book, co-authored by Srijan Pal Singh.

"...I calculated all my variables and then clearing my throat said, 'Sir, the missile is at a point of no return. We cannot turn back on the test now. It is too late.' I expected a debate and a barrage of questions from my boss and Seshan. But to my surprise, as the hour hand neared 4 AM, and the sun prepared to rise, Seshan replied, 'Okay,' and then with a deep breath and a pause. 'Go ahead'," the book says.

Three hours later, the Agni missile system was ignited on May 22, 1989.

"It was a flawless test of hope and aspirations of a bunch of young scientists who could not be deterred by any force on this planet. We had made history. The next day, there was a storm in Chandipur which partially destroyed our testing facility. But we all knew that we had already won the race for Agni," Kalam said.

Agni was,is,and will be no threat to US interest, then why was US had kept more pressure on GOI to hold this test ??

He was mislead if this kalam thing isn't cooked up. How would giving a bomb to a country that treats us muslims as second class citizens improve anything other than create a nuclear race between 2 neighbors. Kalam for many muslims will be a traitor, if he existed in the first place. No offense meant but what was the purpose of going for nukes? It forced Pakistan to go for nukes too.

To India there more in the world besides Pakistan .

Nations other than Pakistan takes decisions based on holistic threat perceptions .

Pakistan takes all its decisions based on India.

With the kind of thoughts you express one is grateful Lucknow is rid people with such thoughts.

My Question to all Indians did Kalam had his own house in India or was he not allowed to rent a house just like other muslims :lol:? Second question was he allowed to eat beef as job and education is secondary things for us but one should get beef :omghaha::omghaha:
At first try to come out of the old rotten concept of dividing the world to Muslims and Kuffirs (angels & demons). And answer to your first question is yes, he had a house ( though not as large as the 'Jinnah house', but he has got his place in the heart of millions, and the answer to your second question is he was a vegetarian...

I find it strange how a new muslim account has to come in and it starts with abuse. Where are the old muslims to defend dear old bharat? Yasir Azam isn't your name, take pride in your faith. There is nothing wrong in being a hindu. I am not against hindus. But I realized a long time ago that India is secular only in name and we had no place in it. I may be a little critical of it but I do not hate Indians per say. You should admit your fake identity though. Even if you don't then try to win your opponents with logic and debate. Remember Gandhi never talked to a person in a high voice let alone swear at the people here, apparently those same Pakistanis who own the site.

Is it possible in Pakistan for a Hindu or Christian to be the President ? India treats its minorities as people who deserve equal rights and opportunities. There are aberrations but that is not the norm. India is a secular state by the constitution of India unlike Pakistan that has a mention of Islam in every corridor of power. Pakistan is not what you founding father wanted it to be. He wanted a secular state. Your fore-fathers made it a monster it is today that has no place for plural ethos but run by a narrow interpretation of Islam. Even those who came from India are labelled as mohajirs. Those who dont believe in Islam are tagged by another name. The army has an iron grip on foreign policy and defense procurement. The civilian government is a puppet. If it is not, there is an imminent coup. It is a pity that Pakistan is producing brain washed youth who have no grounding of reality. Pity they believe they are the guardians of Islam. History of all the wars from 1948, 65, 71 and 98 are so twisted. When I make conversations I realize how twisted their text books must be.

On why we have nukes is none of your business. You are not the center of our universe. Stop imagining that. You are not that important. Last, show some respect to most humble man who achieved the impossible against all odd. Dr. Abdul Kalam is not just missile man but a Bharat Ratna and the people's president.

India needs more Kalams. I dont think I regretted any death more than his in my lifetime. Respect.

He was true sole for every INDIAN.
Before going he taught us that you are first an INDIAN and then you can become whatever you want to be.

Firstly give respect to a great man. Secondly please dont put the Muslims of India with the rest of the lot they are Indians first any thing later. Same applies to me first is my mother my country.

Just because a few looser talk and take advantage of Hindu Muslim vote bank politics not all are the same. We live like brothers together.

What if Pakistan went for nukes?? lol what you dont understand is India as a country has a vision we want to be a great country we want to be economically, militarily, socially, culturally and politically strong we aspire to be a great nation on the planet.

That dream is what drives India (You might laugh at it showing me India has no toilets, poverty, rape etc) but the point is we as a country have a vision and we are moving towards it.

So i hope you understood why India wanted nukes because we aspired to be a strong nation.

Apparently I was watching a tv show in which the Pakistani living in Usa was asked about the number of Indians and Pakistani living in USA, and the pakistani member says there are many MUSLIMS living in USA working in high posts, just thinking how all MUSLIMS becomes Pakistani, when the fact is muslims living are India exceed the total muslims in Pakistan, No. of Masjid is most is in India than any Muslim country. So all muslims are Pakistani and Indian even though they live india, love India, die for India.

I am even amazed with the mind of the Pakistani how they think. I just want to enter their mind and see how much rubbish logic they have stored about India, Hindus, RSS, Modi, Jehad, Beef, RA&W, Kashmir and there is no connections between the logical analysis of their brain and the age, education, and the Position.

He wish APJ Kalam should have worked in Pakistan because he was Muslim. The logic of Two Nation Theory contradict with the facts they are been tooth by heart from the birth that Hindu and Muslim cannot live together. If this facts and belief is broken than the whole logic of creation of Pakistan fails.
