Religious reasons have forced US basketball player, Ibrahim Jaaber, to end his contract with Lithuanian top side, Zalgiris Kaunas.

*It was a huge surprise to the Zalgiris administration which found out about Jaaber’s decision in a letter.

According to the Kaunas side's website, the 28-year-old said he can’t play at the club which has cheerleaders in sexy outfits, and adverts for alcohol or betting firms on its uniform.

The Muslim player, who also has a Bulgarian passport and competes for the country’s national team, wrote that he’s most likely to quit playing in Europe.

Jaaber added that he realizes that this decision will cost him financially, but he’s ready to make sacrifices for the sake of his beliefs.

The American has spent just six months in Lithuania, moving to Zalgiris from Italian side, AJ Milano, last October.

Zalgiris, who are currently battling in the Euroleague’s Top 16, say there are puzzled by the whole situation and planning to demand compensation from Jaaber.

if religion is way of life, than sports too is way of life, i would say a more better life style than religious one, and i don't know which religion or which religious scriptures ask any one not to play sports. But, it was stupidity at its best, sports has become a way to become rich now, but those who have gave their life to particular field of sports did so because of their love to particular sport, only a mullah can find sports incompatible with religion.

he was paid to play, not to watch the cheerleaders, the cheers leader were doing what they liked and loved to do. giving up playing because there were cheer leaders???

your understanding of english is as good as your writing. You couldn't understand what it all meant..He left it because he felt a thing which has nudity, alcohol and bettings as its part and especially the logos on his outfit as if dint want to spread the wrong message so he just got of a million dollar game just because he believed that this life is just a test and the life hereafter is the life forever and this little sacrifice here will get him much bigger gains then...

.
well its his belief, but if he did it for bigger gain later, then its all business.. :)

His belief, his choice. He is not forcing it on anyone. He is not oppressing anyone. He has all his right to restrict himself.

I respect him for acting on what he believes without harming anyone. Hope, people change themselves than asking others to do so.

Hats off to the guy.

Obviously it is freedom of opinion and will. He chooses to follow a set of believes, good for him. If he isn't concerned with the absurdity of his beliefs, who are we to complain. As long as he isn't hurting someone else, he can do whatever he chooses to.

But he has to bear the consequences of his decisions, which will most likely be financial in nature.

No big deal. his life his beliefs. He wants to play then play and if dont want to play dont play. whats the fuss?

its really not fair to term him as extremist...thats harsh on the guy!

.
At least he is not a hypocrite like many other religious people. He does deserves a big round of applause to standing up to his beliefs.

.
Well its his life and his choice.
However the only player who have impressed me with his character and dedication and a balance of religion with his team mates is Hashim Amla. What a cricketer. !!
