Satellite to be launched for monitoring CPEC projects

Pakistan and China will use space technology to carry out planning and execution of development projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) more scientifically, and in this regard a satellite will be launched in June 2018.

The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and the China Great Wall Industry Cooperation (CGWIC) signed an agreement for the development and launch of the ‘Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite (PRSS-1) System’. Minister for Planning, Development and Reform, Ahsan Iqbal and CGWIC President, Yin Limping signed the agreement here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Iqbal said that bilateral cooperation between the two countries in space domain would open new vistas of socio-economic and scientific cooperation, giving boost to the historic bilateral cordial relations in other fields.

Space technology is fundamental in socio-economic development, infrastructure upgradation, agriculture production, urban planning in new age, he added.

The minister said that the agreement would also transfer space technology to Pakistan and the PRSS-1 is yet another flagship project between China-Pakistan relations after CPEC. It would go a long way to redefine the bilateral relations, he said.

Mr Iqbal said that the new project would also help Pakistan in national security arena by strengthening border security and surveillance apparatus.

Islamabad—Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) signed a contract with China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) for the development and launch of Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite (PRSS-1) system.
Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal and President of CGWIC Yin Liming inked the historic agreement.
PRSS-1 will be the first remote sensing satellite of Pakistan with multiple applications that will significantly assist the socio-economic and infrastructure development activities in the country. The project assumes greater importance in the backdrop of the ongoing gigantic China Pakistan Economic Corridor project. It will also be utilized to help in various aspects of disaster management such as floods forecasting and damage assessment. Its use will also be expanded into the areas of mapping forestry and urban development. Besides socio economic benefits, the PRSS-1 will also serve the needs of the national security especially in the context of security and border surveillance.
PRSS-1 will be a high resolution Electro Optical Earth Observation Satellite having a life of more than seven years. The system contract consists of one satellite, two ground control stations and a comprehensive know-how transfer program. The satellite will be launched in June 2018 from China. An indigenously developed experimental satellite by SUPARCO will also be co-launched with the PRSS-1.
The cooperation between Pakistan and China in the space domain will open new vistas of socio economic and scientific cooperation giving boost to the historic interstate cordial relations in other fields.
China had helped Pakistan in launching Pak-sat IR from Xichang Satellite Launch center in south west Sichuan province, which replaced Pak-sat 1.

India has been protesting the corridor's passing through Azad Kashmir ever since the project was kicked off by President Xi Jinping during his visit to Islamabad last year.

This should prove to be a vital to ensuring security and scheduled development of CPEC. The primary reason to launch this satellite is to monitor CPEC progress given its sensitive nature. China is pouring a mammoth amount of money into these projects and monitoring the development is essential to the investors. For realization, Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and the China great Wall Industry Cooperation (CGWIC) signed an agreement. The launching of this satellite to monitor CPEC progress is being hailed as yet another flagship project between the two nations.
