The war on terror and its effects on Pakistan cannot be understood without understanding the wider picture in the region. Clausewitz rightly noted that War is extension of Policy by other mean . This war on terror or as Obama administration has renamed it OCO (Over Sea Contingency Operation) is a war of interests between Old Bear Russia and its Ally Dragon China at one side and The US and NATO on other side and the battle ground is AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN .
Strategists call Middle East and Central Asia as two weights of Power Dumbbell. Who ever holds this dumbbell holds the throne of World. Pakistan and Afghanistan is the rod joining the two weights. Trillion of dollars of Gas and Oil reserves are known to be hidden for exploitation in Central Asia. In this era of Peak Oil US and its Allies are fighting a cold war with Russia and China for Possession of CIS oil Reserves.
According to Journalist Ahmed Rashid , US supported the Taliban in its early years. Between 1994 and 1996, the USA supported the Taliban politically through its allies Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, essentially because Washington viewed the Taliban as anti-Iranian, anti-Shia, and pro-Western. Between 1995 and 1997, US support was even more driven because of its backing for the Unocal [TAP pipeline] project.
In 1997, another US company Enron executives privately met with Taliban officials in Texas). They were given the red-carpet treatment and promised a fortune if the deal [goes] through. Bakiyev said that economic considerations and the negative public attitude towards the base contributed to the decision. A bill calling for the closure of the base and the eviction of U.S. forces was passed by the Kyrgyz parliament by a vote of 78 to one on February 19, 2009. The following day, February 20, an official eviction notice was delivered to the U.S. Embassy in Bishkek, according to the Kyrgyzstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The news of the base's closure followed the announcement of a new agreement between Russia and Kyrgyzstan in which Kyrgyzstan will receive $2 billion in loans and $150 million in financial aid from Russia. Most observers see the two events as connected, and believe that Russian financial assistance was offered on the condition that U.S. forces were expelled from Kyrgyzstan. Currently, the U.S. governments gives $150 million in aid annually to Kyrgyzstan. According to General David Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command, around $63 million of that sum is directly connected to the base. The larger Russian package is viewed by some analysts as an effort to "out-bid" the Americans.
Referring to the closure of Manas Air Base, Pentagon spokesman Geoff S. Morrell directly accused Russia of "attempting to undermine [American] use of that facility". U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates also said that, "The Russians are trying to have it both ways with respect to Afghanistan in terms of Manas. On one hand you're making positive noises about working with us in Afghanistan, and on the other hand you're working against us in terms of that airfield which is clearly important to us."
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev distanced his country from the announcement, saying that it was "within the competence of the Kyrgyz Republic" to decide how the Manas base functioned.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation had been urging Kyrgyzstan to close the base since 2005.
Russia has time and again accused US for sponsoring anti Russian color revolutions in its areas of influence.
At present reports suggest that Russia and china are supplying Taliban in Afghanistan with weapons and money. Iran which is having troubles due to its nuclear ambitions and is facing US and Israeli sponsored insurgency in its Kurdistan, Khuzestan, Iranian Azerbaijan and Sistan and Balochistan is also looking negatively at US and NATO presence in Afghanistan (Seymour Harsh, New Yorker 2007).
In Pakistan a division between Extremist forces has emerged in recent years. Few favor attacking Pakistan for its help to US and NATO where as others have restrained on orders of Mullah Omar. Pakistani government has accused that Foreign Countries are sponsoring the anti Pakistan Taliban where as US and NATO accuse that Pakistan of still helping Taliban in Afghanistan.
US and NATO in Afghanistan started Pashtun Genocide after the invasion. Taliban movement in Afghanistan has now become Pashtun National Struggle against occupation.
According to Pepe Escobar, who writes in Asia Times. The first Target for now in Great game in central Asia is Balochistan.. Taliban movement is Afghanistan has changed into Pashtun National Struggle. But US and NATO has successfully diverted it to Pakistan. With Pashtuns dissatisfied Balochistan can be easier to dismember because about 50 % population in Balochistan is Pashtun
India on other hand has emerged as a new Ally of US and NATO. India and Pakistan have so far fought 2 major and 2 limited wars. India sees it self as an emerging giant. In addition of traditional enmity with Pakistan. Indian enmity with China and Chinese friendship with Pakistan has moved it near to US.
Indian 90 % trade depends on sea route. For that India has built one of the strongest navies in world with 2 air craft carriers and 4 naval commands. On other hand PRN cannot challenge Indian navy in the region.
China needs oil imports to sustain its development from out side. To cover this draw back of week navy. china is making pipelines starting from friendly countries to China. Burma china and Pakistan China oil pipe lines are two big examples.
According to reports China is building Gawader port. Chinese naval presence in Gawader for protection of Oil refinery and Oil pipe line connecting Gawader to Sinking will allow and guarantee China its much needed oil supply
Pakistans Gawader Port and help from china bells alarm in both Washington and New Dehli. This port is on the mouth of Strait of Hurmaz from where about 40 % of world oil supply passes every day. On other hand proposed TAP pipe line will also brings oil and gas to Indian Ocean via Gawader and Balochistan. This fact worries India because Pakistan will be in Position to block Indian supplies any time.
According to reports US has told India to look for central Asia for its oil needs. . India has established its air base in Tajikistan. This is first Indian air base out side India. This base gives the idea of Indian interest in Central Asia.
Indian leadership thinks If Pakistan survives; in future India will be in serious troubles. They see Pakistan and China friendship and cooperation as serious threat to Indian interests. And as kutlia advised they are doing every thing to destabilize Pakistan. No wonder one can observe that 90 % anti Pakistan propaganda and Pro Balochi succession propaganda originates from India.
America who also considers China as a Rival competitor has given free hand to India to destabilize Pakistan.. According to intelligence and military sources India is sponsoring TTP terrorism in Pakistan. I have interviewed many veteran Soldiers who have confirmed that they have killed many non Muslim foreigners who were fighting in disguise of Taliban in Adam Khel and Swat. The main objective of Indian intelligence operation is
1. to weaken Pakistan Army
2. to create anti Pakistan sentiments in Pashtuns
3. And ultimately dismember Balochistan and if same happens to FATA it will be a bonus.
Pakistan is slipping away from American hands and Pakistani Public is Fastly becoming anti American and Indian . At least in educated circles people are talking to leave US alliance and governments strong stance against India.
As Chinese say every conflict is an opportunity and every conflict brings opportunity. This OCO or WOT has brought US opportunity to come out of American Alliance.
Pakistan has been victim of American Imperial games now we are reaping what we sowed on American directions and wishes (I dont blame US alone, Pakistan Strategic elite is also equally responsible). We have sacrificed more than NATO and US in War against terror but are still victim of US poisonous propaganda and policies and that of its allies. Knowing what we sacrificed still US leadership is dusting salt on our wounds and blaming Pakistan for its stupidities in Afghanistan. Its high time for government and people of Pakistan to understand the great game being played in the region and the real enemies of Pakistan. We need to leave American and NATO alliance and Join SCO and other regional forces. History has proved that the States who become US allies fall very disgracefully. The Thing to remember is Religion has nothing to do with this war. Its clash of Strategic and Political Interests which is being called War on Terror or OCO.
