KARACHI: It seems like everything is heading in the right direction for Pakistani cinema, as the makers ofWaarhave already announced its sequel,Waar 2.Waarbecame the highest grossing film in Pakistan’s cinematic history when it surpassed the Rs200 million mark at the local box office in November, beatingChooriyan’s record-breaking take when it was released in 1998.

Though the film is yet to be released internationally, with the UAE and the UK being the first likely release regions, the sequel has already been announced for an expected release in 2015.

Waar revolves around the efforts of the Pakistani army and intelligence forces as they try to stop a terrorist attack from occurring within the country. The film stars actors Shaan and Hamza Abbasi.

Representative of ARY films revealed thatWaar 2will not be directed by Bilal Lashari, but by the writer/producer ofWaar,Dr Hassan Waqas Rana. The reason behind this directorial change has not been disclosed. Sources close to ARY Films reveal that given the massive success ofWaaron Eid 2013, the producers are aiming for an Eid 2015 release for the sequel.

Waar2 will be a collaboration between Mindworks Media and ARY Films, and is all set to go into production in 2014. The movie will be shot in a number of international locations including Russia, Yugoslavia, UK and Turkey and will cast both local and international actors. However, this is not the only collaborative project between the two companies. Mindworks and ARY will also be collaborating on another movie,Delta Echo Foxtrot. Details of the two projects were shared at a press conference held at the ARY office in Saddar, Karachi on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Salman Iqbal, President and founder of ARY Digital Network said, “After the super success ofWaarand the sound relationship that we have developed with Mind works Media, it is natural for both companies to bring their expertise together for even bigger and better movies.”

Top-notch directors from both Pakistan and Hollywood will work under the umbrella of this collaboration. Shooting forDelta Echo Foxtrot, the first venture under this collaboration will begin at the end of 2013, with the film slated for a 2014 release. The plot forDelta Echo Foxtrotwill centre on the concepts of courage, sacrifice, passion and patriotism. While the cast of this movie is yet to be finalised, it will not only boast top names in the industry, but will also find new faces, auditions for which are currently being held. Further details of both the movies will be shared in the coming weeks.

hope both movies raise standard bar much higher.

I think Waar was a really good movie to watch because of its director , Bilal Lashari.

If waar 2 is made by an amateur director, then this movie would be a disaster. Statements released regarding waar 2 has made me worried already.

Like how they gonna cast 100,000 of actors or something.. like What the helll? when has that ever been a criteria of a good movie or direction?

A good director can make a chair in an empty room look epic because of the way he shots it. I hope the new director of waar 2 realize the concept of aesthetics before its to late.

Mean while, I am looking forward to the remake of Maula Jutt directed by Bilal Lashari.

Before releasing Waar nobody knew to Bilal Lashari ... Pakistan has enough potential ... Who knows that new director might have done amazing job ..........

Hassan Waqas Rana is the same guy who produced Waar.

Mr Bilal Lashari had a really nice portfolio of music videos even before he directed Waar. also, Mr Bilal Lashari has been formally educated in USA in video direction.

I don't think Mr Hassan Waqas Rana has such qualification and experience. Also a director is an artist. Is Mr Hassan Waqas an Artist? I don't know about that too...

Combined that with statements of casting 100,000 of actors as extras. This sounds more like a hazard waiting to happen followed by law suites then a good movie.

You can, shot a video of a broken chair in an empty room and make it look epic How many actors are on the screen, is not what makes "good direction"...

I hope Mr Hasan Waqas Rana hires a good, well qualified director, but if he still wants to direct the movie himself, then so be it. I hope my concerns don't materialize and he directs an even more epic movie than Waar 1.

Here is some of the work of Mr Bilal Lashari before he directed Waar. He used to direct music videos.
