Hull sections of the US Navy's (USN's) 14th Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) have been joined to form a watertight unit, the shipyard responsible for completing the boat announced on 1 September.

Washington (SSN 787) achieved 'pressure hull complete' status at Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII's) Newport News Shipbuilding yard in Virginia.

The fourth Virginia Block III boat, Washington is 83% complete, according to the announcement. Delivery is expected in 2016.

Virginia-class SSNs are being built under a teaming arrangement between HII and General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut, with the yards alternating on boat delivery.
