Improving Water Management: USAID to fund irrigation for Tank – The Express Tribune
WHAT THEY WANT OUT OF IT?
ISLAMABAD: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has granted $12 million for the construction of the Waran Canal System.
Water is one of the biggest constraints on agriculture and economic growth in Pakistan, said USAID Country Director Jock Conly at the launch ceremony on September 12.
We hope to increase employment opportunities and income for local communities by funding this project, he added.
The project, which aims to irrigate 28,000 acres of land in Tank, will be implemented by Pakistans Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA).Currently, the main source of water for the area comes during the monsoon season.
The Gomal Zam Dam is also part of the same initiative by the US. The dam is hoped to generate electricity for 39,000 households, store irrigation water, and provide flood protection for Tank and DI Khan districts.
