US Visa Law Can Affect Iran’s Tourism Income: Economist

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Recently devised visa restrictions in the US, which affect dual national Iranians and people who have visited Iran, can reduce the country’s GDP (gross domestic product) from tourism industry by 3 to 15 percent, an Iranian economist said.

According to a bill, which was passed in the US House by 407 to 19 on December 8, visitors from the 38 “visa waiver” countries will need to obtain a visa to travel to the US if they have been to Syria, Iraq, Iran or Sudan in the past five years.

It means citizens of many EU countries and the rest of the 38 states participating in the program who travel to Iran either for business or visiting the country’s attractions will have to obtain a visa should they ever want to enter the US.

Seyed Mohsen Tabatabaei, the secretary of Iran’s Urban Economics Scientific Association (IUESA), noted that US President Barack Obama signed the bill after a lasting nuclear agreement between Tehran and six world powers and said that it will affect Iran’s tourism industry seriously.

“Undoubtedly, the US congress has targeted Iran’s tourism industry, causing European tourists who were interested in visiting Iran to feel uncertain to travel to the Islamic Republic,” Tabatabaei said.

This will reduce the country’s GDP and prevent the rapid growth of its tourism economy, he added.

On December 18, US lawmakers sent Obama a huge tax and spending package, which also included reforms of the US visa waiver program. The president quickly signed it into law before leaving Washington for his annual holiday vacation.

Obama approved the visa restrictions while the nuclear deal that Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) finalized on July 14, 2015 was meant to remove anti-Iran restrictions.

I'm not sure how this law is working? @MarkusS you have recently been in Iran. Does it mean you now need some sort of visa to travel to US?

Bro I'm feeling its effect in Iran. Few months ago there was much more tourists in Tehran. My job is talking with tourists. I have a job in Milad tower, however not as main job. I enjoyed more few months ago. I have already talked with thousands of tourists. Most of tourists in Iran are Iraqi and Chinese. Their number isn't decreased but number of European tourists is decreased.

I think Europe will hit back as they are currently starting their business with Iran again. Airbus, Peugeot and even US Boeing now have significant contracts with Iran.

Ishallah.

The Yankees should end their insane hostility toward Iran and let Iranian economy grow.

Tell me more... If possible!

I was only a sherpa amigo. I took part in a goup that was invited in iran to start preparation for the airbus deal that was made with IranAir ect. Like giving briefings, check infrastructure, make education plans and so on.

We had not much freedom. Were in great hotels. And the limited time we had outside the planned schedule was not enough to see much. Tehran and Shiraz. It was nice.

no, it was different than i imagined it. I thought its not that cold. Not that green.
To see cold you could travel to Iran western provinces , to see green you can go north ...and if you desire to have your brain boiled up central parts of Iran is recommended ...

No comments on cities & people?

I saw none. We stayed at hotels and when we had free time were pushed through museums and tourist traps. We had a guid with us who spoke fluent italian and english. She was really nice. Beside that contact between us and locals was not that big.

What i saw was nice. I didnt like Tehran very much but Shiraz looked very great. There was some kind of huge Villa with a water way going down much stairs. It looked really cool.

Iran is mostly portraied like a huge desert here. So i was kinda suprised that it was rather green. Some areas looked similar to some areas we have in italy. :)
