US THAAD Installation in South Korea Poses Security Threat to Russia? / Sputnik International

Moscow has expressed its concerns regarding the THAAD deployment in South Korea, pointing to the fact the American anti-ballistic defense system poses a substantial threat to Russia's security.

N Korea Warns US THAAD Deployment in S Korea to Target China, Russia

Moscow considers the possible deployment of the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea as a significant security threat to Russia and the wider region, according to Alexander Timonin, Russia's Ambassador to South Korea.

The Russian Ambassador to South Korea expressed his deep concerns regarding the deployment of the American THAAD anti-ballistic missile system on the Korean Peninsula.

"What concerns us is that a US missile defense system could be placed in areas not far from Russia, adding to worries over THAAD’s radar system or technology,"

Although Washington has repeatedly claimed that the proposed defense system is aimed at dealing with a growing missile threat from North Korea, Russia's experts point to the fact THAAD’s working range extends beyond the Korean Peninsula.

"Of course it has multi-purpose tasks. One of the tasks, of course, is North Korea,” “But, additionally, the capability of this system allows this equipment to intercept missiles, Russian… missiles for example. So, yes, unfortunately, there are grounds for concern vis-a-vis [the] security situation of Russia… and the Chinese," Alexander Vorontsov, a Moscow-based Korea expert at the Russian Academy of Sciences said in an interview with the Diplomat.

China has also strongly opposed the US missile defense system installation in the South Asian region, citing security concerns. Seoul is currently walking a tightrope, trying to maintain good relations with both Beijing and Washington.

Soft Power: Beijing Offers Seoul to Join AIIB, Reject THAAD Deployment

However, South Korea's decision to join the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), despite Washington's vocal displeasure has added fuel to the fire. On the other hand, the possible deployment of the THAAD system still sparks controversy among Eurasian geopolitical players.

While President Park Geun-hye remains silent about the THAAD issue and avoids addressing it directly, in accordance with Seoul's policy of "strategic ambiguity," some of South Korea's senior officials, particularly Park Geun-hye's party members, have openly praised the idea of the defense system deployment.

Of course the source is Sputnik.

This issue has been argued to death. Russia of all nations should be not be worried about ONE battery of THAAD. They have thousands of warheads that they could use to target South Korea and overwhelm THAAD.Why would they want to anyway? Plus it is not even rated against ICBMs. They're trying to push us out of Europe, that sure ain't working. They try to push is out of Asia, same result.

Uncle Kim probably cried to his new buddy Putin saying that the evil Americans wanted to shoot down his prized missile:lol:

Of course it is not NYT or WP.
Nope I don't like those either. I try to use my own background knowledge and logic when possible to sort through the BS. That is one reason why I don't like politics, to many machinations through the media on all sides. But when it directly pertains to the military, I can step in because of my somewhat competent background knowledge and make decisions for myself. But when it does come to politics, I like Reuters. GS is good for military info, GlobalSecurity.org - Reliable Security Information It takes news and info from all different countries, including your own, and then cross-checks it with all other sources.

Oh and here is why I don't like Sputnik. Created and run by the Russian government that replaces RIA Novotsi, essentially state run propaganda. Its really not that hard to see bias and then do the research, BTW I'm only 15. Good day sir.

Anybody can be at any age and of any profession when online. I won't question that as I do not care.

But good for you. GlobalSecurity disseminates news-articles from a variety of sources, including VOA, Sputnik and People's Daily.

I also suggest globalresearch.ca .

At this stage, the leaders of both countries should know very well that anti-missile systems are not meant to avert an full-scale ballistic strike, but to rather contain stray launches, untempered leadership, or likewise mishaps. Through deductive reasoning, the only plausible reason why THAAD units are in South Korea would be to prevent a miniscule-yet-aggressive force from initiating something that would upset the regional equilibrium, i.e. North Korea.

This website reeks of nothing but pure sensationalism and I wouldn't be the least surprised if the Kremlin parlays this into a pretext for upping its military ante in the likes of Ukraine.

Also considered that if Russia wants to hit the U.S. They fired far north over the Arctic. Not towards over the Pacific.
