US says will continue discussions with Pakistan as issues arise; stresses long-term commitment
WASHINGTON, Nov 4 (APP): The United States on Monday said it has an ongoing dialogue with Pakistan on all aspects of the relationship and will continue discussions as issues arise. We have a strong and long-term commitment to Pakistan and its people. We believe the relationship is an important one, State Department Deputy spokesperson Marie Harf said. As President (Barack) Obama said during Prime Minister (Nawaz) Sharif’s visit that our hope is that despite what inevitably would be some tensions, and occasional misunderstandings between our two countries, the fundamental goodwill shared between our people and our governments will certainly continue, she noted at the daily briefing.
The spokesperson did not confirm one way or another reports on the killing of Hakimullah Mehsud, in a drone strike, but stressed that the TTP has been a direct threat to the U.S. national security.
Mehsud was involved in failed Time Square terrorism bid and other incidents targeting Americans, she said.
We will continue discussions as issues arise, she said in response to a question in the context of Pakistan’s reaction to the killing of Mehsud on the eve of a peace dialogue effort.
Obviously, we continue these discussions as issues arise. In terms of the GLOCs (ground lines of communication), we have seen statements of an Opposition party about potential impact on GLOCs routes. We continue to have substantive discussions, she said in reply to a question about Pakistani landroutes that transport supplies into and from landlocked Afghanistan.
The GLOCs are important to the U.S. , NATO and Pakistan, she remarked, adding the supply lines are open and there is no disruption in transportation.
The spokesperson noted Prime Minister Sharif was just in Washington as representative of the Pakistani government and the two sides had discussions on wide-ranging issues.
We had a very wide-ranging and productive set of conversations. This came in the context of improving relations with Pakistan, if you look at the arc of the last several years.
