The Navy plans to rip out the DDG-1000's Advanced Gun System mounts -- the original focus of the Zumwalt-class destroyer's offensive firepower -- to make room for a new vertical launch system that will fire Conventional Prompt Strike missiles, as part of a new goal that scraps five years of planning to field long-range hypersonic weapons on Ohio-class submarines. Last month, the chief of naval operations revealed plans to field CPS on the DDG-1000 by 2025 -- a major policy...

Zumwalts will be capable of launching 16, 4000km+ Mach 17 missiles.

Curious, would this potentially reignite the DDG-1000 project if implemented correctly? I would imagine this capability would be fostered rather eagerly if successfully installed on existing Zumwalts.

Zumwalts are now geared towards offensive strike and anti surface warfare.

They’ll likely play a similar role the 4 Ohio SSGNs do today. A stealth warship that can launch 16 4,000km hypersonic weapons is a significant deterrent to any foe.

As a fan of the gun & why I'm into the zumwalt in the 1st place it is regrettable the gun have to be removed but I can understand why it have to be removed because the the gun is the most expensive part of the ship & pretty much almost the entire reason why the navy discontinue it.

Also I too would like to see the projects being continued if it successful.

From cruise to hypersonic, what a leap, before an enemy ship has time to reload it will be sunk by the hypersonic missile. But what happened to the lasers are they going to be mounted too?

Highly unlikely. Zumwalt already has VLS. Why they don't want the gun?

Muricans entitled to have their fantasies.
the only thing that kept them away from their funny farms:D

That day will come when they will talk of super duper weaponary that will fire tungsten and depleted uranium at speed faster then the speed of light and hit an eyeball from range of 10,000 km. :yay: :yay::yay:

They slowly walking towards that way now.
:omghaha::omghaha::omghaha:

the guns a failure. the original plan was for rail guns, which clearly didnt happen, so they ended up stick slightly long range "normal" guns on it and with so little VLS, the entire ship is a dud. making it a hypersonic missile carrier would at least make it somewhat useful again.

Very likely and the guns with expensive ammo, its not worth it. The VLS for the hypersonic missiles of that size are too small unless they are firing the PRSM missiles which can fit in it if they took that Army missile to Navy. But for the hypersonic missiles they are planning is too big, hence why getting rid of the guns and installing a bigger VLS which is a better option along with firing cruise missiles from the smaller VLS.
