WASHINGTON -- The US Missile Defense Agency and Israel’s Missile Defense Organization successfully demonstrated the David’s Sling Weapons System in a series of tests at Yanat Sea Range in Israel, MDA said in a statement released Wednesday.

David’s Sling is a missile defense system to defend against large-caliber rockets, short-range ballistic missiles and other developing threats, and it is central to Israel’s multi-layer, anti-missile array, MDA said. The US has helped to co-develop the system. Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is the prime contractor while Raytheon is a subcontractor.

The series of tests is the fifth of its kind and is a “critical step in ensuring Israel has the capability to defend itself from a very real and growing threat,” MDA director Vice Adm. James Syring was quoted as saying in the statement.

The tests involved all subsystems of the weapon, pitting the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems-made David’s Sling against threat-representative targets, and taking them out with Stunner missiles.

“The interceptors were successfully launched, performed all flight phases and engaged the targets as planned,” the MDA statement said. “Preliminary analysis indicates that test objectives were successfully achieved.”

The US has invested a great deal in Iron Dome and David’s Sling development and production in Israel. Raytheon and Rafael also co-produce Iron Dome.

Israel’s Missile Defense Organization and Rafael began delivering major components of David’s Sling to the Israel Air Force in March 2016.

Israel and the US in recent days have successfully completed a series of tests involving an advanced version of the 'David's Sling' missile interception system.

Also known as the 'Magic Wand,' the anti-missile system trials were conducted covertly under a media blackout.

"The success of the test is part of the development on the future threat deterrence system," said the Defense Ministry. The trial was led by Israeli Rafael Advanced Defense Systems at a test field in central Israel, as part of coordination between the Defense Ministry’s Administration HOMA program for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure and the US Missile Defense Agency.
The trials examined the capabilities and performance of the system, which is designed to intercept short- to medium- range rockets and ballistic missiles, including guided projectiles, cruise missiles, aircraft and drones. Its range of coverage means it can destroy incoming threats over enemy territory, away from Israeli skies.

The trials examined several scenarios, which stimulated future threats, that the system may face during conflict.

"During the series of tests, after incoming missile detection, the MMR (multi-missile radar) located the targets and transferred the data to the central firing program, which calculated interception protocols," the Defense Ministry stated.

'Magic Wand's' missiles were successfully launched and performed all stages of flight, including destroying the target, as planned.

Last week, Israel strengthened its defense against an Iranian missile onslaught with the transfer of Arrow-3 interceptors from the Israel Missile Defense Organization to the Israel Air Force.

In face of the growing missile threat, the Arrow-3 will form the uppermost layer of Israel’s multi-layered defense system, along with the Arrow-2, David’s Sling and Iron Dome system.

David's Sling test concludes successfully
Defense Ministry announces successful testing of the sophisticated anti-missile system, which managed to intercept simulator rockets fired from a high altitude above the Mediterranean, weighing hundreds of kilograms.

The Israeli security apparatus completed an experiment stretching over a number of days of the new advance David’s Sling system capable of defending against mid-range missiles.

The system is being developed and manufactured jointly by Israel's state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd and Raytheon Co, a top US arms maker.

During the experiment that took place on Wednesday, a number of precision missiles were launched from Israeli Air Force (IAF) jets above the Mediterranean, at which the advanced system dully fired interception rockets upon detection

Weighing hundreds of kilograms, the simulated missiles that the system blasted out of the skies were just as precise. The first version of David’s Sling has already been transferred to the IAF which is expected to announce that it will be fit for operational use this year.

The system is intended to complete Israel’s air defense capabilities, integrating itself into the anti-missile family which includes the famous Iron Dome short-range interceptor system and the Arrow ballistic missile interceptor, both of which are in service.

The experiment marks the fifth of its kind for the David’s Sling system since the completion of its development.

The latest round of testing also included American cooperation, with US development paramount to its creation, both in terms of its design and funding.

The sophisticated technology with which the state of the art system is equipped is designed to protect the entire breadth of Israeli landscape.
