Pakistan received a major diplomatic gain on the final day of the 2nd Conference of the Parliamentary Union of Islamic Countries (PUIC) when on the intervention of Dr. Fehmida Mirza, the Conference agreed to include the issue of Kashmir in its final declaration.

The 11-point draft declaration, put for the consideration of the 51 Member Conference had no mention of the age-old dispute although it dealt in detail with the Palestine problem, inter-faith dialogue, rights of minorities in the Islamic countries, the Tunisian unrest and other contemporary issues of the Muslim World.

This anomaly was pointed by Dr. Fehmida Mirza, who led the Pakistan’s Parliamentary Delegation at the one-day Conference.

The Parliamentary Union of OIC member countries (PUIC) has concluded its 13th meetings in Abu Dhabi and issued, for the first time, the 'Abu Dhabi Declaration'.

The meetings were presided over by Speaker of the UAE's Federal National Council (FNC) Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair.

The 24-article 'Abu Dhabi declaration' contained recommendations pertaining to political, economic, social, cultural and legal issues, as well as human rights, environment, and women rights.

The declaration also indicates the Islamic countries positions on regional and international issues, including the Palestinian cause, Syria's Golan Heights, Lebanon, Iraq, Tunisia, Sudan, Somalia, Cyprus, Jammu & Kashmir, Azerbaijan, peaceful uses of nuclear technology, making the Middle East a region free of weapons of mass destruction and combating terrorism.

Meanwhile, the PUIC had approved a proposal tabled by the FNC for a parliamentary vision on confronting challenges posed at the stability and development of the Islamic world.

The proposal, to be studied during the forthcoming meeting, focuses on the parliamentary role in facing political, economic and social challenges in the Islamic countries, including the Islamophobia and Islamic countries; relations with other cultures.

"The meeting achieved fruitful outcome, including the Abu Dhabi Declaration and the resolute to correct the distorted image of Islam in the West.

India reacts over OIC statement

6-23-2011_82870_l.jpg

NEW DELHI: India reacted strongly on Wednesday to the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) description of the state of Jammu and Kashmir as a region that has been occupied.

In a statement issued here, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said: "We have seen reports that the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) has again chosen to refer to Jammu and Kashmir incorrectly, in an invitation to an Indian invitee to an OIC meeting. This is most regrettable."

The statement further said: "The state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India. We totally reject any reference or description to the contrary."

The Organisation of the Islamic Conference is an international organisation with a permanent delegation to the United Nations, with 57 member states.

This refence of Kashmir as an 'occupied territory' comes just a day after Mirwaiz demanded inclusion of genuine Kashmiri leadership in the dialogue process between Pakistan and India for bringing about a permanent settlement to the Kashmir dispute.
