Hundreds of drug users shelter in squalid conditions under a bridge in western Kabul synonymous with hard drugs and violent crime - and since the Taliban came to power, raids on areas where addicts gather have become more frequent. With poppies cheap and easy to grow, Afghanistan provides around 90 percent of the world's production of heroin, but since retaking power the Taliban have pledged to ban narcotics production.

They should also build rehabilitation centres so that these addicts don't join ISIS or something in exchange for drugs. You cannot just stop using drugs suddenly, it has to be gradually tapered off with appropriate medication. Opioid withdrawal issues can be life threatening.

That's something you'll do if you had to.
By the way go to rehabilitation center and see for yourself what percentage if the people there are regulars

They are facing food shortages and there is no money left in the country and u want them to build rehabs, was it taliban that asked them to start taking drugs. If there is a threat of them joining ISIS then they should just kill them. They are a menace for the society and their families anyway.

It is well known fact even in 2000's Taliban had started to eradicate crime and were closing drug trade
before Mr Want to catch a guy jumped into Afghanistan

I don't exactly how close relations were with Afghanistan and Pakistan but in 2000's relations were quite good

Didn't the Taliban benefit from the heroin trade to benefit their operations? Are not drug addicts a by-product of being engaged in the business? Seems like an abdication of responsibility.

That is nothing but pure BS. If they benefit from heroin and poppy then why ban it now? Taliban have always been very strict on drugs, they even ban cigarettes. It were the warlords in support of US who benefited from drugs.

when they were conducting an insurgency they were practically a narco-cartel putting El-chapo to shame and we are right at there border
So you know Pak and Iran should have the first hand knowledge of this drug trade

Have u ever grown poppy? In northern areas we used to grow it when tjere was no ban. Its plants have colorful flowers and can be seen from aeroplanes. Its smell can be felt miles away and it takes the plant 6 month to mature. The plant is also sensitive and can be damaged easily. I dont see how taliban could have any influence to grow it and protect it for 6 months, as the whole country was under US and NATO surveillance. Taliban may have relied on goods smuggling but not drugs. Drugs were mostly controlled by warlords who were american allies. The US looked the otherway while those warlords traded drugs. It would have been very easy for US to destroy poppy fields once a year and destroy their income. This drug allegation is pure propaganda by the west.

I suppose with the talib there no way but to wean off narcotics.
