Rising Kashmir, Daily Newspaper, Srinagar Jammu and Kashmir - UK-made unmanned cars to defuse IEDs in JK

Jammu, Dec 21: Army has inducted United Kingdom (UK)-made Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for its use against the Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) in Jammu and Kashmir.
“For defusing of IEDs planted by the militants and avoid causalities in blasts, latest state-of-the-art technology of UK-made ROVs have been inducted in the operations here,” a senior army official was quoted as having said by a wire news agency.

The ROVs, remotely-controlled tracked vehicle designed to conduct investigation and deal with the IEDs, have recently been delivered to 115 engineers in the state along with several other Engineering units, he said.
The new ROVs have chains like a tank or a JCB and are more effective as compared to the old ones, which had only wheels.
The radio control ROV can be controlled up to a distance of one km, cable drum up to 150 meters and fibre optic cable up to 200 meters, he said.
There is full-fledged command station, which acts as a control centre for remote operating and monitoring ROV, the official said, adding the station has several latest tools to deal with IEDs, including Manipulator shotgun, Disrupt laser, Mechanical Grab, Car towing equipment and X-ray system.
The ROV can lift explosives up to 150 kgs and defuse it safely, he said, adding that it has three cameras and digital screen to monitor all activities.
"This is best machine to deal with IEDs. We have already conducted test trials and they were best results", they said adding that it has given an edge to the troops in counter insurgency areas against IEDs.
The militants are using IEDs and land mines to strike troopers and VVIPs without coming into direct contact with troops in Jammu and Kashmir.

Whatever happened to DRDO's unmanned vehicles which was inaugurated with much fufare.

At times I do agree with even schineese, DRDO is much talk and very little work. For once, their PR wing should be barred from making press declarations which has recently become a laughter challenge only. They should work quitely and unveil only the finished and accepted products rather then the intermediate trass.

Why can't they learn from ISRO? Some good project director like APJ Abdul Kalam is the order of the day for DRDO.

I understand there have been delays in providing concrete solutions by DRDO but such criticism is uncalled for

1)The Army has placed orders for 20 Dakshs

2)Daksh is currently under going trials, Ninety per cent of the robot’s components are indigenous

So to have something to deal with this menace in the mean while they have ordered these mean machines...this could have come in as a alarm as a BSF (DIG) was killed in a ied blast a couple of weeks ago

Well, my outburst was not directed towards the UMV, but towards the habit of counting the eggs beforehand. This habits of Indians in general and DRDO in particular has resulted in lowering our credibility to some extent in the world community when in comes to defence products.

Thanks for the info though. But I still stand by my statement that DRDO's project leadership requires a dynamic and visionary person like APJ.
