UK launches defence plans review

A review of the implementation of the UK defence and security plans has been launched, according to a surprise announcement by the UK Cabinet Office.

The review will look at the “UK national security capabilities, in support of the ongoing implementation” of the 2015 National Security Strategy (NSS) and Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR), with work being carried out by the Cabinet Office, which co-ordinates activity across the UK government, and individual government departments, including the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Details of the implementation review were posted on the Cabinet Office website on the afternoon of 20 July. This day is known in the UK government as “thrash out Thursday” when bad news and controversial proposals are released a few hours before the London Parliament goes on its summer recess or vacation, giving ministers several weeks before parliamentarians can question them.

“The review will be led by Mark Sedwill, the UK National Security Adviser, with individual strands taken forward by cross-departmental teams, and will be carried out alongside continued implementation and monitoring of the 89 principal commitments set out in the NSS & SDSR,” said the announcement. “The national security capability review will include examination of the policy and plans which support implementation of the national security strategy, and help to ensure that the UK’s investment in national security capabilities is as joined-up, effective and efficient as possible, to address current national security challenges. The review will also be informed by work which has already been commissioned in response to recent national security-related incidents.”
