June 09, 2010
Islamabad - On June 7, 2010, five Pakistan Navy doctors completed a week-long visit to the USS Mesa Verde to discuss the challenges of providing medical care aboard ships at sea and to prepare for potential humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts as Cyclone Phet passed through Oman and approached Pakistan's Makran coast.
"I have learned that having a forum to exchange medical information and work through scenarios with foreign medical doctors is important for the development of our medical care," said Lt. Moriah Krason, Mesa Verde's Senior Medical Officer.
During the one-week visit, U.S. and Pakistan Navy doctors exchanged medical knowledge and toured medical facilities aboard the ship. The Pakistan Navy doctors also participated in a mass casualty drill' medical exercise on the ship's flight deck with dozens of simulated casualties, and observed the U.S. Navy's first aid procedures.
"Mesa Verde has a very hardworking, warm, and friendly medical center," said Pakistan Navy Cmdr. Sohail Abbasi of the Pakistan Navy Training School.
In addition to exchanges, the U.S. has provided training for hundreds of Pakistani military officers in a wide range of leadership and development programs including counterterrorism, intelligence, logistics, medical, flight safety, and military law.
