PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Pakistani police arrested a 20-year-old American man late Monday in a militant-infested area close to the Afghan border, an officer said.

Officers were investigating why the man was in the area, said officer Pir Shahab. The region has seen months of fighting between Taliban and al-Qaida extremists and is believed to be a possible hiding place for Osama bin Laden and other foreign extremists

He said the man — identified on his passport as Juddi Kenan — was arrested at a checkpoint while trying to enter Mohmand tribal province without the special permission to be in the region required by Pakistani law.

A U.S. embassy spokesman said he had no information on the arrest.

Asked whether he was believed to be a journalist, a tourist, a soldier or a militant, Sahab said: "These are the questions we are trying to investigate."

Another police official, Marjan Khan, said the man was wearing a traditional Pakistani dress and appeared to be a civilian.

"He has told us that he was a student at a community college in Florida and wanted to enter the tribal region to see a friend," Khan said.

He said the man was carrying a laptop computer and a travel bag, adding that he had been moved to an undisclosed location for questioning.

Militants in the tribal area are blamed for rising attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Pakistani authorities often claim to kill or arrest foreign extremists, mostly from Afghanistan, the Middle East and Chechnya, in the border area.

Pakistani intelligence agents re-arrest American
Updated at: 2224 PST, Wednesday, October 15, 2008
KHAR: Pakistani intelligence agents re-arrested an American detained in the country's volatile border region and were questioning the man, police said Wednesday.

According to a foreign news agency, the man – identified by Pakistani police as Juddi Kenan – was carrying a laptop computer when he was arrested Monday at a checkpoint in the northwestern district of Mohmand

District police chief Waqif Khan said the 20-year-old was released from custody Tuesday but was picked up hours later at his home in the nearby city of Peshawar.

``He is now in the custody of intelligence agencies, who are required to quiz him again for further satisfaction,'' he said.

Peshawar is the main city and lies outside the tribal zone, where special permission is needed to visit.

Khan said the man had dual American-Pakistani citizenship.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said American officials have visited and spoken with the man and are doing everything they can for him. He declined to provide more specific details – including confirming the name – because of privacy concerns.

He said that, generally, U.S. officials in such a situation can provide a list of lawyers who might be able to help, provide food and clothing and try to help the person communicate with family members. ``We try to help them out as best we can,'' McCormack said.

Pakistan is battling a growing militant threat in the northwest, where al-Qaida and Taliban fighters have established bases and plan attacks on American and NATO forces across the border in Afghanistan.

Security forces killed four suspected militants overnight in the area, the latest casualties in a major military offensive against al-Qaida and Taliban fighters there, said Jamil Khan, the No. 2government representative in the area.

Khan said that the main Bajur town of Khar is under curfew and that fresh troops were flowing in along with tanks and artillery.
