KARACHI: A blast near the Old Sabzi Mandi area of Karachi targeted the former Mauripur police station chief, and killed at least two people and and injured 24 others, Express Newsreported.
Express Newscorrespondent Nadeem Khan said that according to initial reports, former Mauripur SHOShafiq Tanoliwas in the car with his driver and two guards that was targeted by the bomb. It had initially been reported that Tanoli had been killed in the attack, however, he only suffered non-fatal injuries.
An initial inspection by the bomb disposal squad revealed that between two to three kilogrammes of explosives were planted on a motorbike that exploded next to the left-side of the car and that the bomb contained ball bearings as well.
The dead and injured have been shifted to Abassi Shaheed hospital and another private hospital.
Khan added that the blast was so powerful that it set Tanoli’s vehicle on fire while the blast was heard as far away as Garden.
AIG police Shahid Hayat told the media that at this time, the police is not sure who is responsible for the attack and that they are conducting investigations into the attack.
According to details the blast took place in Hussaini Chowk No 2. Windows of nearby buildings were shattered as a result of the blast shock-wave.
Tanoli had recently been shifted from his post as SHO Mauripur and was heading the Special Investigation Team for District West. He was also the investigation officer in the Wali Khan Babar murder case. Tanoli had also conducted operations against elements aligned with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and other gangs in the Mauripur area.
He has previously escaped assassination attempts as well.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan has taken strict notice of the blast and sought a report from IG Sindh.
