JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia and China on Wednesday celebrated the 20th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah sent a cable of greetings to Chinese President Hu Jintao on the occasion, commending the strategic relations.

"I take this opportunity to praise the remarkable progress achieved by the strategic friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries in all fields," King Abdullah said in his message.

He said Saudi Arabia wanted to advance bilateral relations to an even higher level to benefit the people of the two countries. King Abdullah and Crown Prince Sultan, deputy premier and minister of defense and aviation, extended their hearty greetings to President Hu and the Chinese people on the occasion.

The Chinese president said in a statement that Sino-Saudi relations had seen comprehensive development. "The Chinese government and its people have always viewed the bilateral links from a strategic perspective," he said.

"As the international community is undergoing complex and profound transformations, it is in the fundamental interests of both Chinese and Saudi people ... to strengthen and consolidate Sino-Saudi relations, properly deal with issues in hot spots, and meet various common challenges," Hu said, adding that it would contribute to world peace and stability.

"I would like to join hands with Your Majesty to continue increasing political mutual trust, expand cooperation in all fields and advance Sino-Saudi strategic friendship to a higher level," Hu said in a message to the king, which was carried by Xinhua news agency.

China is set to become a leading trading partner of Saudi Arabia with bilateral trade expected to reach a whopping $60 billion shortly.

A reception was held at the Saudi Embassy in Beijing to mark the occasion. Senior Chinese political adviser Wang Zhizhen and Saudi Ambassador to China Yahya Al-Zaid addressed the reception.

Wang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, spoke highly of the development of Sino-Saudi relations. She said China is ready to make joint efforts with Saudi Arabia to deepen the friendly and mutually beneficial cooperative ties between the two nations.

Yahya said political, economic and cultural relations between the two countries made remarkable progress in recent years, creating a solid foundation for the Saudi-China relationship. Around 500 people from various circles attended the reception.

Abdul Rahman Al-Hazza, spokesman of the Ministry of Culture and Information, opened a Saudi Cultural Days event in Beijing, which was attended by Chinese Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Chao Sao Hu.

Al-Hazza highlighted the growing relations between the two countries. He said King Abdullah's visit to Beijing in January 2006 opened a new era in bilateral ties. An exhibition featuring Saudi Arabia's culture, heritage, traditional dress and jewelry of Saudi women, and its industrial and economic progress is held as part of the cultural week. A number of paintings and photos on Saudi Arabia are also on display, the Saudi Press Agency said.
