The 9th IDEAS, The International Defense Exhibition and Seminar, in which 418 firms from 34 countries are converging upon in Karachi, has become the center of interest for top Pakistani visitors and foreign representatives.
Many Turkish companies, including Machine Chemistry Industry, Roketsan, Air Electronic Industry (HAVELSAN), Defense Technologies Engineering (STM), the Foundation of Machine Chemistry Industry (MKEK), are participating in the fair so as to enhance the cooperation with Pakistan and introduce new projects of their own.
Mustafa Şeker, the deputy secretary at the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries of Turkey (SMM), expressed some evaluations regarding Turkey's projects on defense with Pakistan.
Emphasizing that they not only intend to sell their goods to Pakistan, but are participating in the fair to collaborate with Pakistani counterparts, he stated that what they really desire to introduce in the fair is ATAK helicopters, in which Pakistan is interested. ''We are expecting to make progress in its sales,'' he says.
Şeker explained that Pakistan shows interest in Turkish-made MİLGEM ships and infantry rifles. Both have been tested and liked by Pakistanis. Stating that Turkey and Pakistan in the fair have signed a memorandum of understanding on the sale of 52 Super Muşak training planes, he says, ''Unlike westerners, we are not just trading products with Pakistan, but we are also sharing technology with them.''
'The biggest exportation of military ships in one lump of Turkish defense industry'
In his statement, Davut Yılmaz, the general manager of STM, highlighted they are the company which most frequently cooperates with Pakistan among others in the Turkish defense industry.
Considering that the project is the biggest exportation of military ships in one lump occurring in the Turkish defense industry, he stated they have developed fleet replenishment vessels for Pakistani naval forces. Pointing out that the ships were built in Pakistan and designed in Turkey, he says one was launched during activities of the 70th anniversary of Pakistan's independence.

Command and control project from HAVELSAN
By stating he was pleased with the attention given to HAVELSAN in the fair, Teoman Başaran, the director of operations in Pakistan for HAVELSAN, said:
''They visited us from Pakistani naval, air and land forces. We have 'the Land Forces Command and Control project' which is extremely important and about to be finalized. We have been making developmental works on this project for two years. Also, we are supporting STM in its modernization of Pakistani submarines.''
Pointing out that there are around 850 experienced engineers, working at HAVELSAN, he said,''We are especially aiming at operating in Gulf countries and in neighboring countries of Pakistan, coordinated from the center in Pakistan. We are seeking markets even from countries like the Philippines and Malaysia to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. We are using local sources and considering to benefit from the enormous pool of engineers of Pakistan by providing manpower partly there.''
Hasan Şahan, the manager of marketing and exportation at MKEK, said they are producing hundreds of varieties of weapons ranging from ammunition to heavy ones in their 10 factories.
Bringing some samples of their productions to Pakistan, he lastly states, ''Products we brought here to the fair are something which can be demanded or we sold earlier. One of them is the infantry rifles which the Pakistani army would buy. We have a rocket which has 2ç75 inches and can be fired from the air. Each year, we deliver 3,000 to 4,000 of them to Pakistan. We also have 20mm ammunition for anti-aircraft, which we sold to Pakistan earlier.''
