Turkey’s Directorate General for Religious Affairs (Diyanet) has sent a delegation to Cuba for a project involving the construction of an Istanbul mosque, adapted for Havana’s historic center.

Mustafa Tutkun, who is chairing the Diyanet delegation, said the mosque in the Cuban capital would resemble the historic Ortaköy Mosque in Istanbul. The Ortaköy Mosque bears aesthetic features that Tutkun hopes will suit the local Cuban architectural style.

The Diyanet Foundation is funding the construction of the mosque, which will serve the 3,500 Muslims who live in Cuba.

The project is part of a wider campaign in the Caribbean, with the Diyanet also planning to fund the construction of a mosque in Haiti.

Yeah now that they are getting some economic freedom and a mosque. They have to coolest cars too.

Fidel Castro was a notorious religion hater and closed down all houses of worship and declared religion bad for people's minds.
However around 1991 Fidel Castro changed things from being an atheist state to a secular one.

Yeah now that they are getting some economic freedom and a mosque. They have to coolest cars too.

The beauty is that till the fifties they were free and imported latest American Cars.

After they turned Communist, all imports were stopped, but they worked on those cars and have kept them running meticulously , some as Taxicabs.

It is really cool to see these 1950's Cars with fresh Paint running all over the Island.

Looks really cool.

They also have great Doctors.

Didn't know there were any Cuban Muslims.

Looks like that is about to change...

Well, Havana being the Capital and all, I am sure the 50 or so Muslim countries have their Embassies there so the Mosque will have enough Worshippers.

Turkey should also participate in the fight against Israel & USA
I don't think that building mosque is a good thing to do, it only make people see islam as a danger of Turkey don't eradicate Al Qaeda hosted also in their country

Moreover Erdogan is a muslim brother so people think that Islam wants to dominate the world

Actually what he wants to do is make NATO muslims to fight against the axis of resistance muslims

Turkey granted permission to build first mosque in Cuba

The Cuban government has approved plans for the country’s first mosque after Turkey's Religious Affairs Foundation (TDV) sent a delegation to Cuba to discuss building a place of worship for Muslims in its capital Havana.

Having paid a visit to the Cuban department of religious affairs, TDV assistant manager Mustafa Tutkun sought permission to begin work on the mosque, which will be designed after the famous Ortakoy mosque in Istanbul.

The mosque is being built to serve the city's 3,500 Muslims and will be complete within a year, Tutkun said.

Landfor the mosque has already been allocated in the city's Old Havana district. Tutkun said that the design of Ortakoy mosque would fit in nicely with the architecture of the surrounding area.

Yuksel Sezgin, press adviser for Turkey’s Religious Affairs Foundation (TDV), added “We thought the mosque would fit perfectly in Havana’s historic district with the neighborhood’s European architecture.”

Cuban Muslims have until now had to make do with performing congregational prayers in a living room of Pedro Lazo Torre, the leader of Havana’s Muslim community.

Luis Mesa Delmonte, a Cuban professor working on Middle Eastern studies at El Colegio de Mexico in Mexico City, said that Cuba had been planning to build a mosque long ago using national resources, but turned to Turkey when it couldn't find the funds to do so.

The plan is part of a wider project by the TDV in building mosques for Muslims who live in the Caribbean.
A similar project in Haiti is due to be complete by the end of this year.
