Tunisair celebrated International Women’s Day today by arranging for an all-female crew to run a round-trip flight to Paris that departed from Tunis this morning.

“This initiative is meant to highlight the journey of women, and to celebrate International Women’s Day, which is as important to African and Arab women as it is to the women in the rest of the world,” Soulafa Mokaddem, director of external relations at Tunisair, told Tunisia Live.

The crew consists of a female pilot, pilot-in-command, chief steward and four flight attendants.

“Tunisia is a pioneer country when it comes to the empowerment of women,” Mokaddem said. “The first woman pilot in command in the Arab world was Tunisian. In the eighties, the first woman plane engineer in the Arab world and Africa was also Tunisian.”

She added that, “at Tunisair, we believe in equality between woman and men, and we work on its implementation in the company. Women are directors and members of the technical staff. They are present everywhere.”
