ISLAMABAD, Sept 5: Two suspects operating a network for the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the twin cities for generating funds via extortion and kidnapping were arrested by a joint investigation team of security forces and capital police, sources close to the development told Dawn.

On the light of the information given by the suspects, efforts are in progress to arrest the leader of the network operating from United Kingdom.

The suspects were handed over to capital police for further legal action and in this regard the police are seeking a Red Warrant for the network’s leader from Interpol (international Police), they added.

The sources said that in response of intelligence reports the network was operating in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi to generate funds from traders and big shots.

In response, vigilance was mounted in and around the business centres of the twin cities. One trader of Blue Area was targeted and Rs6 million was demanded from him but later the extortionist was arrested.

The arrested was identified as Mohsin, during investigations it was disclosed that he collected the money from the trader or the big shots of the twin cities, while threatening them with dire consequences.

After collecting the amount form them, the money was handed over to Mohammad Asif, a resident of Rawalpindi, who was operating a network of TTP in the region.

Over the disclosure, a raid was conducted in Rawalpindi which led to the arrest of Asif, who transferred the money to Manchester through Hundi.

He also disclosed that the money was transferred to Mudassar Shaheen, residing in Blackburn, a large town located 27milies (43km) north-northwest of the city of Manchester.

Shaheen, an active member of TTP got the money collected by separate networks, working in different parts of the country.

He got Rs3 million last month transferred from Pakistan to Manchester.

He used SIMs (Subscriber Identity Module) registered with fake identification and details, besides, blocked identification of other people.

A senior police officer said that the Interpol was approached through Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to obtain the Red Warrant of Shaheen, in order to arrest him.

No official word over the arrest was available from capital police. However, an officer on condition of anonymity neither denied nor confirmed the arrest and said that “the arrest was in his knowledge.”

On the other hand, he said that it is in the knowledge of the police that a network of the TTP was operating in the twin cities to generate money for the militants for the last couple of months.

The security forces also approached the police some three months ago for conducting joint operation against the network, he added.

In last week of August, the security forces arrested a militant from Rawalpindi’s Bungish Colony affiliated with Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan in response of the intelligence report. The alleged militant Muzhab Khan, came from Mohmand Agency some days ago and was an active member of TTP.

The motive behind his arrival was reconnaissance of some sensitive installations, and VIPs located and residing in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

During interrogation, he also disclosed the location of an active commander of TTP Wasif Jan, under whom he was working in Sawabi.

On a tip off, the security forces raided the hideout of the commander, which resulted in his arrest too.

The raiding party also recovered documents, including maps of installations and plans of the terrorist activities along with details of some other active members of TTP.

Earlier, in mid July, the capital police arrested a suspect suicide bomber during a raid in the area of Sabzi Mandi.

An alleged terrorist, accompanying the raiding party, who had information of the suspect, recognised and identified him.
