Tehreek-e-Taliban, Pakistan (TTP) has denied on Saturday reports of secret negotiations going on between Pakistani authorities and the terror outfit. Pakistans mainstream media had quoted high-placed government sources saying the negotiations had already begun and that the positive outcome of these resources had already started showing. This was further endorsed by governments official spokesman, the federal information minister, Pervez Rashid.
However, TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid has taken the wind out of the sails of governments claims of secret talks. Categorically denying holding peace talks, he said that not only no contacts have even been made, there was no offer to initiate peace talks.
The developing situation is very puzzling because the BBC Urdu, quoting an unnamed senior government official and a Taliban commander, had also reported the beginning of peace talks.
At present, there are numerous groups of anti-Pakistan terrorists operating from the North Waziristan Agency and from their stronghold in rest of the country. All these groups are affiliated with the TTP which is the umbrella group. There were visible fissures among the ranks of TTP when a week ago a commander of Punjabi Taliban, Asmatullah Muaweea welcomed the talks offer by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in his first televised address to the nation since taking office after winning elections in May. Muaweea was immediately expelled from the TTP.
It seems that Pakistani government is in secret contact with one of the groups of terrorists taking advantage of cracks among their ranks. As a gesture of good will, the government has postponed scheduled execution of three terrorists convicted by Anti-terrorism court.
TTP is a terrorist group fighting Pakistani State and have no affiliation with Afghan Taliban under Mullah Omer. Pakistani establishment has been blaming India for supporting, funding and arming the outfit to destabilize Pakistan. The safe havens of these terrorists in Afghanistan are in the knowledge of Afghan government and NATO commanders. It is believed that Afghanistan and NATO raised TTP in order to teach lessons to Pakistani State for refusing to attack a faction of Afghan Taliban, Haqqani Group believed to be presently living in Pakistans restive tribal area where the government has very weak writ.
