On 27 May 1999, Gunner Sepoy Shafaqat Ali commanded by Capt. Faheem Tipu, Pakistan Army Air Defence shot down an IAF MiG-27ML using an ANZA-II SAM. The IAF fighter (Serial No. 1135), was flown by Flt. Lt. K. Nachiketa of No. 9 Squadron, IAF pilot who ejected and was taken prisoner. The IAF fighter was shot down after intruding into Pakistan airspace at 11:15 a.m. (PST) near Marol-Hamzi Ghund, Pakistan. Aircraft intruded into Pakistan airspace twice - it first marked a Pakistani position on the LoC with smoke bombs and then came in for a rocketing and strafing attack on the same post. It was shot down during the second attack as it exited. Wreckage fell on the Indian side of the LoC. IAF Pilot captured and made POW. Released on 4 June 1999.
He served at Siachen for more than a year in the early days of Siachen conflict with India. He established military posts at Siachen and served at glaciated heights of around 20,000 feet. As a Lt. Col, he commanded an Infantry battalion at Okara and then as a Brigadier-General, commanded two infantry brigades, one of which was at Kargil. He was awarded Sitara-i-Jurat for his extraordinary service and bravery by the then President Rafiq Tarar, after the Kargil encounter.
On 30 April 1989 , a raiding party consisting of 11 persons including 4 officers was organized by Major Abdul Rehman Bilal. The party closed in with enemy machine gun position at approximately 1900 hours. The fire was opened which caught enemy by surprise. However, enemy soon retaliated with small arms and rocket fire. Own troops were relatively safe since Kamran Post was protected by a boulder. The raiding party in the meantime inflicted heavy damages to the enemy. This final blow forced enemy to withdraw asking for a meeting where almost all of our terms were accepted. The area was vacated and declared as de-militarized zone.
A great war hero, PAF's Group Captain (retd) Cecil Ch, twice Sitara-e-Jurat and a Sitara-e-Bisalat. Some time back Group Captain Cecil Chaudhry narrated the story of PAF's gallant operation on Halwara led by Squadron Leader Sarfaraz Rafeequi in a program of Defence Day celebrations on PTV. It was to stop Indian attacks on Pakistan soil. Cecil was the only Pakistani pilot who came back alive upon completion of operation and achieving the task to the fullest, whereas our other pilots embraced shahadat, and IAF was not able to use that airfield again to launch any operation during the entire war of 1965. He narrated when they were going to the cockpits, Rafeequi came to him, punched him on the shoulder and said, "I m sorry Cecil....I m leading you to a mission from where we might not return." Cecil said, "I turned my back to him, saluted him and said 'Sir, I love you so much that I can follow you to hell.'" Rafeequi smiled and said, "Your wife will hate me for this." Cecil said, "I laughed and replied 'Sir, you won't be there, I won't be there, who cares".
